My chicken laid her first egg :) . How do I move them?

Until your hen goes broody, just keep collecting the eggs and eat them. Put one in the nest and put her there, to make sure she knows to lay there. You'll know when she goes broody... she'll not get off the nest and start growling at you when you try to take an egg...

I would use a sharpie and mark the egg if you intend to leave it there. That way, you can eat later eggs if you wish, knowing you're getting the fresher eggs and not risk cracking one that's been sitting out who knows how long. I do this for my free range ducks. They pick a spot to lay, and once I find it it usually has several eggs in it. If I take them all, they tend to find another place to lay and the game starts all over. If I mark the eggs in the nest when I find it, they continue to lay in that nest and I can take the unmarked eggs to eat.

Instead of making a nest box you might consider milk crates. All of mine (even the banties) use them and love them. They are washable, bleachable and the perfect size for a standard size hen. Fill it about half full with shavings or straw and call it done!

Hi Debiraymond, how many chickens do you have? Are you raising them for eggs or baby chicks?

I am a young college student and this is my first time raising chickens. I love it.

I sit them top up and fill them about half way with shavings. When one of the girls does go broody, I turn the thing on its side so that the babies can come and go. Most of the time they are open side up though.

If you want a steady stream of chicks, why don't you investigate an incubator? Chickens are notoriously bad about going broody when you want them to. Mine never go broody at good times (and I have a whole herd of silkies out there!). With the incubator you can hatch all the chicks you want! Plus it is loads of fun.
