Hi everyone!

This morning I discovered my young Polish chicken - whom only started laying eggs about 3 months ago - was acting strange, barely moving and very lethargic. She’s usually very energetic so I went to check on her and she was not okay at all.

I checked her and her tummy, but I can’t feel an egg. I also don’t want to press hard or anything like that, so I’m not 100% sure if she’s eggbound.

I’ve given her 2 warm baths today. She soaked for about 20/30mins and then I blow dried her both times.

Now she’s isolated in a quiet place in her little pen.

She’s not interested in eating and the little poop I’ve seen - which is super watery and kinda yellowish smells super bad - like rotten.

What should I do? I hate to see her suffer 😭

Thank you!

Get some calcium in her asap, human calcium citrate with vit D is best, but tums will do in a pinch. Open her beak and pop it in, she can swallow it whole. She may be eggbound, or possibly have a broken egg inside, that needs to be expelled.
I just gave her tums because I didn’t have another form of calcium. I’m hoping she’ll be able to pass her egg. She also has a bald spot on her back that I suspect she’s been pecking and pulling her own feathers.
About a week ago I’ve found a soft egg as well, so I’m thinking it must have been her and she’s having some sort of calcium problem.

I give them organic very healthy feed and they always have eggs for snacks and mealworms. For some reason she is having so many issues :(

How is your hen doing today? Are they on layer feed, or do you offer oyster shell on the side? You maybe giving them too many treats, which dilutes the nutrition value of their food. Sometimes, it is just that hens issue also. Continue the calcium for several more days.

Hi! Shes not well at all. I’m actually at the vet now waiting for them to tell me how she’s doing. She smelled so bad this morning that I think the egg is broken inside of her or something like that :(

Oh wow, I didn’t know I couldn’t give her too many treats. How often do you recommend?
I usually give them hard boiled eggs and mealworms. They’re not big fans of oyster shells so I don’t offer them much of that. All of my other chickens are great and very healthy, but I’ll definitely change the treats situation

Thanks for the update, good luck at the vet. Oyster shell should be offered all the time, and hens will eat it as needed, just leave a container off to the side, in the run. Treats should be no more than 10% of total diet, or less. Only one treat at a time, and best is not every day.

Thank you for checking in.

I’ll start just leaving the oyster shells in the run for them, and treats you would say is better to offer every other day? I don’t give them much - just enough for everyone to get a little bit, but I do it everyday and that’s probably too much
