My chicken was attacked by the flock. Straining to poop almost three weeks latter?

Hello all,

This is my second post to back yard chickens. Like many of you I imagine I'm here now to contribute, but it is my injured chicken that motivated me to join.

I'm at a loss as to why this almost two year old speckled sussex is straining to poop nearly three weeks after her attack. The details are as follows. About three weeks ago I found her in one of the nesting boxes nearly pecked to death. She had been molting and my guess is one of her flock pecked a feather and there was some blood and then the attack started. All of her feathers were gone off of her tail and a large portion of her back, belly and a significant amount of feathers on both wings. If it had gone on much longer she would have been killed.

I immdeiatey seperated her. She's in a tote on my laundry room. Treated her with vetracin, started the perdue stress electrolyte in her water, supplimental heat. What has me terribly concerned is that she is "crying" when she poops. And when she does the poop does not fall from her cloaca like it normally would. Her rear end was norribly pecked and although initially I thought it was a stuck egg, or constipation I don't think it is. I treated her for both a stuck egg (epsom salt baths daily) and for constipation (epsome salt and molasses given orally) and nothing has really changed. I don't feel a stuck egg, no way it could be after three weeks? She is eating and drinking normally. Her feathers are coming back in, but she still strains to go poop and hearing her in pain breaks my heart.

I've added a few photographs of her injury. I just took these a moment ago. Her cloaca is usually like this. Sometimes I hear little farts and shes always leaking some fluid. Pulls the poop hanging off with her beak and flings it. :-/

I would greatly appreciate any advice for poor Skylar.

Fun fact she is the only one who escapes the run regularly. She has figured out that she can make it over the seven foot fence in the run by flying from the top of the ramp over the fence.

Your hen appears to have more than her share of issues. One is her status as a bullying victim. There is help for her. https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/chicken-bully-chicken-victim-a-two-sided-issue.73923/

You can't know for sure if she has an egg stuck or if she's constipated. So, you should treat for both. It won't harm anything.

Give her a calcium citrate tablet, at least 320mg, right now. It can encourage contractions if she has a stuck egg. Along with the calcium, give her a teaspoon or two of chilled coconut oil. Make sure she has access to clean water to drink.

After you do what Azygous suggests above...

I, too, would have tried molasses, but only once, and if that didn't help, then I'd stop, as too much could make things worse, as in causing diarrhea.

I'd get her on some probiotics, either the powders in water or sugar-free Greek yogurt. Also, if you're into fermenting, that's got probiotics and prebiotics. It'll also help out her crop and digestive system in case anything's brewing in there.

I hope she gets better fast!

I've already done all of that and she never passed an egg. Stopped constipation and stuck egg treatments as I felt as if I was treating something that had passed or was no longer pressent.

I'll try the probiotics. I'm not fermenting, but I plan to get into that. At this point I really feel the simplest answer is the right one. She got nearly pecked to death around her vent and it did some real damage. Still seeing some signs of blood, not major. This coming Monday will be three full weeks since the attack.

Poor thing! Darn chickens! Most times they're so sweet and enjoyable to have. Hang in there. She's come this far! :hugs

Thanks Debbie! She's looking better every day! I'll be at my vet this week for one of my cats yearly wellness exam and I'll be asking my vet what he thinks. My vet does not see chickens but I'm sure he will give some advice.

Today is three weeks since the attack. She is still "crying" everytime she has to poop. I've begun to wonder if she will recover? I'd love to know what the exact nature of the injury is that has her in pain/straining to poop? I also don't want her to suffer. If she isn't going to heal from this, when is the time to send her off to chicken heaven? Still eating and drinking well, feathers are coming back in well. How long for the downy fluff? I don't see any of that?

I'd say at this point the struggle pooping is 100% due to the pecking. Gave her a little rinse off with some soap and water in the sink this evening. There was some bleeding. After in the tote I sprayed some Vetricyn and was putting on some neosporin around her cloaca when some scabs easily came off. Some more bleeding. Gross pictures attached! First pic is after her soapy rinse off. Second pic is after spraying vetrecyn and applying neosporin with a q-tip and the scabs fell off. Wondering if I should still be dosing her with baby aspirin for pain?
