my chicken won't eat or drink and has mucus running out of her eyes and nose

hi as the title says she wont move or eat/drink. She is 4 yearrs old and was wondering how i would be able to get her to eat and drink. Also if anyone knows what this disease is then that would be much appreciated. The mucus is bubbly in the eyes and then when the blinks becomes a sort of tear and starts to gunk up her eyes. She is also having problems breathing as she is gulping for air.

But, for other experts here, if you have some pictures of your sick chicken's droppings, the problem parts that she has , more details of her symptoms may be helpful.

Sounds like she has a respitory illness. You can treat with tylan50. Dose for a large bird will be 1/2cc small bird 1/4 cc given once daily into the breast muscle for 5 days. you can get tylan 50 at the feed store. On the bottle it says for cattle and swine but don't worry.many poultry owners including myself use this for respitory issues. It is the antibotic Tylosin. It is specifically geared for respitory illness. I suggest the injection because dose is much more consistent than a water soluable antibotic because with water soluable the dose is dependant on amount drank. It also gets into the blood stream faster. You should be able to get the syringes at the feed store also. I would start her treatment as soon as possible. If she has a virus the antibotics won't do much for the virus but WILL prevent a secondary infection. I would most definitely try the tylan50 many people have been very successful using that for respitory issues. Myself included. Hope this helps. If you have any questions on giving the injection I believe youtube has a good video on how to do it.you will simply inject on one side of the breast making sure you are away from the crop and not too close to the wing. You will be able to feel the correct area. Just into the muscle of the breast. Its much easier than it sounds. I hope this is helpful and wish you The best.

I agree that she may have a respiratory disease such as mycoplasma or coryza. She really needs antibiotics since she is having so much trouble breathing. Does her head smell bad which might be a sign of coryza, or does she have any bloody mucus from the nose (ILT signs?) Tylan50 as realsis recommended is inexpensive ($14) and very good. Some people give it orally, but shots are the best. Tylan Powder, Oxytetracyclin and erythromycin are also good, and can be put in the water. There are many brand namesso read the labels. Tube feeding or at least dipping her beak into water may help her to drink the medicine, but the medicated water can also be placed into the feed when she is eating. It sounds like she has a respiratory disease of some sort; I don't know which one for sure because those diseases often have similar symptoms. But I do know that respiratory diseases can be severe, so if you want her to live, she needs to be treated. A good antibiotic to use is Tylan50 or Tylan200 injectable, which can usually be found at a livestock supply store. The dosage for Tylan50 injectable is 1cc for large-fowl, .5ccs for bantams, injected into one side of the breast once daily for 5 days. The Tylan200 injectable dosage is .5ccs for large-fowl, .25 ccs for bantams, injected into one side of the breast once daily for 3-4 days. Alternate the side of the breast that you inject into, and use a small needle.

If you can't find Tylan, another, slightly weaker, antibiotic is Oxytetracycline (Terramycin, Tetroxy HCA-280, etc.). The dosage varies depending on the product, but I do know that the tetroxy dosage is 1/2 teaspoon per quart of drinking water for 7-14 days. During antibiotic treatment, do not give dairy products.

Also, if you haven't already, isolate your sick hen in a warm, clean place. Offer her foods like scrambled eggs, moistened feed, applesauce, or anything else that she likes to entice her to eat. Put some vitamins in her drinking water; I use some called Sav-a-Chic. If she won't eat on her own, I would recommend tube feeding. Dip her beak in the water, squirt some in with a syringe, or give water subcutaneously to keep her hydrated.

I agree that she needs antibiotics, but she will die if she doesn't drink, so I would tube fluids to her ASAP.

hi thankyou all so much for the reply's. she's started to eat a few sultanas but her vision seems of as she misses a few time before she manages to peck at the right spot. I tried getting her to drink shown and this is working well thank you all so much. I was told the droppings may be important and after seeing the only one she's done since looking after her i think there must be something seriously wrong. here it is

so yeah doesn't seem at all right to me. She has perked up a bit probably due to food and water but still has mucus running out of her nostrils and eyes.

Where would i be able to buy tylan50 in the uk?

I have a silver laced polish roo that seems very lethargic. Hes eating and drinking. Eyes look good but hes keeping them closed a lot. He walks like a drunk, but I'll note hes hardly moving around at all. He stands in the cage and just slumps his head downward. If I get him out and flip him upside down his neck instantly limps. Seems to have a little mucus coming from nose, none of my other chickens are sick.Any ideas? Im going to try the tylan50 that people are suggesting, thinking it cant hurt to try.
