ChickensAreSweet is correct that chickens LOVE to dustbathe. Ours are forever digging holes in our yard and throwing the loose dirt onto their feathers. It is a natural instinct with the purpose of preventing mites and other pests from taking residence in their feathers. We also have ducks, and although ours don't scratch holes in the ground for rolling in, they burrow their bills into the ground while they're eating grass and dirt, creating small cavities all over the yard. You can always tell where they have been!

Our chickens' dustbathing holes are multi-purpose as well. When it rains, they fill up, creating extremely fun miniature "ponds" for our water-loving ducks! They splash in them, drink from them, and also like to sit in them. But then again, we don't have a pond for our ducks, so puddles serve as a water source to have fun in.
