Every Christmas, and only Christmas, I make my Red Velvet Cake. It wouldn't be Christmas without it. Well this year I am in the grocery store trying hard to remember all the ingredients, I even checked my cupboards for a few things before I went, thought I had it all together and was kind of excoted that I did not even have to make a list. Wrong.
Christmas Eve Day I am ready to do the cake starting early in the AM. I have a few different recipies, and they vary, but I always make the same one I have made for years. I even remembered the buttermilk!
But I thought I had shortning, and I did not! No problem, the last thing I feel like doing is running to the grocery store because I know it will be mobbed which it was. They only had 5 pound cans of it and there was no way I needed that much as I never use it except for the cake and only buy a small container.
That's ok, I will try the other recipie and who knows it might be good? It was a cream cheese frosting so I picked that up and off I went home to bake. It was terrible and no where near the same cake at all!
I just threw almost the whole thing to my chickens and it is a sight to behold. The cake is sitting perfect on the ground, looks beautiful, white frosting with red cake and I just looked out and it is just about gone! They loved it.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to my girls and my one big fat happy rooster.

I was expecting you to say the chickens didn't like it either! LOL Thanks for sharing this story!!

Any chance you'd be willing to share that recipe? I had one years ago that I 'think' came of a powdered sugar box, and I can't find it to save my life now. Seems like it calls for the food coloring to be mixed with the baking soda (or was it powder) then added to the rest.

I would be happy to send it to you! I posted it last year here in the recipie section, I wonder if it can still be dug up there? Either way I will send it to you e-mail later on.

I have decided to post it in the recipie forum in case anyone else "remembers" Red Velvet Cake! It is a very old and many remember the red cake but either lost it or never had it. I remember one year I could not find red food coloring anywhere so I had to make it green because I had a friend who now lives in CA and she would nag me for that cake all year. I will start typing it now.
