My chickens are going nowhere!!! "UPDATE" #2

Even without the permits there is a time limit on how long they can take action on it. Around here they can only fine you for building without a permit for 1 year after the structure was built. However they can refuse to issue a permit in the future if you don't correct the issue. Play dumb on the permit issue.

Ask to see the law as well, I have found that often the code enforcer believes in some imaginery law and goes around enforcing it. They are unable to know every law and code by heart so usually they end up enforcing what they where trained to enforce and the law may actually not exist. If it is a health dept issue you may beable to work with them on it. Around here we can keep chickens, but the health dept can and will condemn them if they see fit.

All excellent advice, but especially the documentation. Write down what people say as you talk to them, don't rely on memory. Good luck, I'll be looking to see how it goes!

I have a neighbor just a few hundred feet down the road who has less property than I do.He lets his free range in the yard too.

Don't know if this will help- but reading some threads in the past about this kind of thing, Somebody joined the 4H as a sponsor . Maybe you can see if they have an exemption if you are part of 4H or something. I don't think it cost much to join and I think sometimes if you are in the 4H they can't do much about your chickens. Anyway - Sorry I don't have details , but maybe you can check it out and see what's up.

Well I've made up my mind that my chickens are not going anywhere. They are not going to enforce a rule on me that nobody else has to heed.I hate to be that way but if it's the rule then everybody needs to abide by it.I'm going to ask the lady if this person is willing to go to court just to get my chickens to go away?I try to live right and do the right thing but everyone around here is not always up to par on everything and my suspects all have things that I know about and wouldn't think of tattling because it doesn't bother me.However as the old saying goes, what goes around comes around and don't throw rocks when you live in a glass house.

Good for you! I am blessed with good neighbors but I feel the same way.

If they want to pursue it tell them you will be happy to drive around and give them a list of all of the violators and they will have more on their hands than they will ever care to deal with.

We got a call about a boat in our front driveway. I said you have to be kidding me and there was an ordinance. I said I passed at least 6 boats, and I don't know how many campers did they get called and they said we only enforce if we get a complaint. I told her if I get a ticket or another call I would be driving around on all of my free time calling them with the addresses of other offenders. I didn't get a ticket or another call. The boat stayed, we were only letting it sit there because someone wanted to sell it and we live on a busy street.

When we built our chicken coop the code was so backward. If we built a coop we had to have a permit if it was larger than lets say 8x10. However you could move a coop that size or larger onto your property and no permit needed. If your county has a similar code sell the coop to someone and buy it back. Problem solved. You bought the coop so it is an existing building.
