my chickens are hot and phanting , but they do NOT WANT TO LEAVE THE..

when it got really hot here a few weeks ago, I locked mine out of the coop because they were wanting to stay in there. They must think that because it's darker, then it's naturally cooler. My coop is well vented but still runs about 5 degrees hotter than what it is outside when it gets so hot out there.

Anyway, if you can, lock them out during the hot part of the day if you can!

LaSombra's comment sounds about right. They are likely relating dark with cool, or just see the coop as a safe place, and go there when stressed or uncomfortable. Try locking them out, if you can. Or at least make sure they have plenty of water.

Another option (I've done this) is to put a small fan in their coop that blows out the vent openings. I put mine on a timer to come on every morning. If you go this route be sure whatever fan you use is FULLY enclosed to protect them from injury. And try a low speed setting.

Good luck. It's great to see that you care about their well-being.

well my coop has a 50/50 roof . 50% of it is closed off to light and the other 50% has light coming thru so during the winter months with snow and all . All i have to do is wipe off the snow on the clear side of the roof and wal la they can get sunlight during the winter and still produce eggs

Well, if leaving a duck in there to die from heat exhaustion is the only alternative, I don't see how spraying water is going to hurt.

I've had chickens die from high heat. It's not pretty.
