My Chickens Are Pigs!

Yes, it's best if you hang it... mine's about 10 inches off the ground. Otherwise they scratch food out of it and straw into it, and poop in it, too. I agree they waste less with pellets than crumbles. I wish I had the scraps you have with all those kids! Notice I didn't say I wish I had 7 kids to make scraps for them. LOL

I have 12 hens of various mostly larger breeds, and one rooster. You are going through more than twice what I do for feed. I do, sprout sunflower seeds and some lentils for them so they have some fresh greens/sprouts daily.... or if I get behind in sprouting, I chop a little cabbage leaves for them. If you ask at your supermarket, most will give you all the "waste" produce they usually throw away. Here, in Texas, that is. I DO scatter a little "scratch" for them almost every day, and watch for big sales on bird seed with fruit or berries, black oil sunflower seeds, etc. Of course, I spoil my chickens terribly, to the point of stopping the car when I see a field full of their favorite weeds, and picking a bunch! LOL Needless to say, they all have names, and I have conversations with them, calling each by her name as I talk.... I think some of them recognize their names! I really do!! But, I'm a silly old widow woman with no one to talk to.

Also, my pellets cost much less than yours for a 50# bag... more like $15 but it is only 17%. I suggest looking around for a plain jane "feed and seed" store and stay away from Atwoods, Tractor Supply and any other popular Retail store.

Let us know about any changes you make, and how it works out. I like to keep track of the 'follow-up'. Thanks.

Thank you for your reply! I can get 16% and 20%. 16% layer is still $20/bag. I have to either buy at walmart, which I don't do! or by from the "local" feed company which is a 2 hr drive away! walmarts 1 1/2 hrs. If I added in the cost of gas, which is $3.85/gal, with their feed I'd probably cry! lol. Obviously the feed is so expensive because of shipping costs. Even the local company has to outsource for part of their ingredients. That's 1 reason I'm trying to formulate a complete feed of my own, using products grown for the most part in Alaska. As for the kids! The leftovers are great! It was quite a shocker adding 4 kids that didn't think twice about throwing food in the garbage instead of giving it to the girls! and boy. But we very quickly came to an understanding! lol
