my chickens have fleas

I sell my eggs for human consumption. So I have a floor trough full of food grade DE and peat moss for the birds to dust bathe in. It helps to keep the bugs in check.

Chicken lice/mites are species specific. They will not live on people. They may get on you, but the can not live on you. I dust mine with sevin dust. Just be careful and dont inhale it or get it in their eyes.

I Googled Chicken Lice Treatment. One site was very useful, but I didn't get the link.

It says an easy way to treat for these Lice, and has some nice pictures to look at, is to take a garbage bag and put one cup of Sevin in it and then take your chicken and put him/her in to the bag with their head staying outside the bag.

Close the bag around their neck holding the chicken-body in the bag and shake the bag to desperse the dust, be sure you are wearing a mask and eye protection.... try not to inhale any dust, then let the dust settle before you take the chicken back out of the bag.

They also have directions on how to treat the entire flock at one time, but it doesn't seem as healthy as this individual treatment does.

You will need to treat every bird that is in contact with that bird, because they do have the same, just not as visable yet.

Make sure you get their vent and armpits completely covered with the dust down to the skin, that's where the bugs get their food, mainly blood.
