I am for sure not an expert on raptors but my guess is the smaller (younger hawk) trespassed on the larger hawks territory to take your girl (so sorry for your loss) and the adult hawk caught the intruder off guard and killed it. Not to take anything away from the roos but hawks can take full grown roos and chickens tend to scatter when a predator is around? I would definitely look into some netting b/c hawks circling over head are bad news for free ranging chickens.

also..Bryan did say that the bigger hawks did have red tails... so yup..maybe mom and dad, hanging around... teaching junior how to enjoy a chicken dinner..

I really have to figure out how to cover that run with netting!
Yeah...i'll def give them some treats! And i was thinking of getting rid of my roos...

that could be what happend!..but why didnt the hawk eat the small hawk then? or at leat tear it up? its toally intact..not missing any feathers, nothing. almost like it has a broken neck...(which would happen if my roos jumped on it..cause they are big boys...
but..... it could be though......never know..

maybe one of thos fake owl thingies??

I would guess terratorial/food dispute between the hawks. A roo can't kill a hawk in one blow and a hawk is not going to stand there and let itself be killed by roos. It can fly really well, so it wouldn't have to fight your roos on thier level, so it really doesn't sound probable that the roos are responsible for the hawks death. However, I have seen many a hawk chase and injure/harm another. Watch out for that hawk circling, he's faught hard for that food and he will want to come & get it. Cover your pen with netting if possible.

the hawk WAS taken by surprise (that much i can tell ya)...he still has food in his mouth and talons...
and he was facing down when we found him..(like something jumped on his back..) we rolled him over for the picture..
so something surprised him.. another hawk or one of my roos.. I guess i'll never know..
