My chickens never used to be mean. 1 is my bantam game rooster (was as sweet as can be), 2 is my 1/2 silkie hen (used to cuddle), and three is my non social bantam game hen. 3 days ago I put a new hen in there. She was half silkie and sweet as can be. They seemed to be interested in her and did their normal dominance greetings with her. I figured they'd be fine. Well yesterday I went out to check on her and this is what I find! Why have they turned so mean????

I am so sorry that is awful. I am not an expert but when I introduced new hens to my flock I was told never to put one in on its own because the original hens/roosters will kill it. I have added two lots of four to the flock and the was only three originally and I had to watch them closely. The top chicken was a nightmare she chased, pecked, bullied the new hens but they all get on fine now. I found that the rooster helped protect the new chickens a lot.
Someone said if you want to introduce one chicken, separate it for about three weeks but let it mingle with the old chickens divided by a fence, e.g. put food both sides of the fence so it seems like they are all eating together, eventually they will accept each other with a bit of luck.
I hope this helps for the future, my chickens are cute too, but give them some competition and they quicky turn, ... nature I suppose.

that is such a horrible thing! what a nightmare oh I'm soooo sorry! so so awful. above post had some good solid advice. this is so sad! I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am .poor girl! I guess they can be really aggressive. I have all silkies so by nature they are pretty gentle but my head hen can get nasty I've seen it. maybe next bird leave in a cage inside there run where its protected then hopefully they won't kill her. I'm so sorry for your loss :(

My hens did the same thing to one of my chicks, but I saw in time to save her from death, but not injury, and she still has a tear in her head much like the one on your hen.
