Well we were a bit later than normal getting out to the farm to feed and lock up the animals. It was just starting to head towards dusk, but not quit there yet when we pulled up the driveway. Both my husband and I way it at the same time. A HUGH RACOON! We apparentely scared it and it ran under our camper. 7 of our hens were running after it!
My husband told me to stay in the car. Yeah like that was going to happen. I jumped out of the car, grabbed the first thing I found, our snow shovel, and dropped my cane. I tried to call the chickens to me, but they were acting like blood hounds treeing a fox. They were looking under the camper and growling up a storm. I think they wanted to eat it.
I would have expected this from geese maybe, but hens. Of course the roos were no where to be seen. Well my husband got a gun, but apparentely the coon went running the other way as my chickens went running that way too. They weren't very happy about loosing their free meal and complained the whole way back to their coop. Snowball even tried to run down the railroad tracks after it. My husband had to send her back. We counted all our chickens and all were still there, if just a bit miffed that they got shorted a free meal. I bet if my husband would have shot it they would have been on it like rabid wolves. Now mind you there is always plenty of food it their coops. They just prefer a meal on the go.
I was terrified that they were going to get killed or hurt, but after the fact I couldn't believe their bravery (stupidity)
