My chickens were killed

I am really sorry we had ours killed by a bear at 2 in the afternoon a few days after getting them. It can be really upsetting, a few years later a fox nabbed a few of them. Right now we only have two but I caught a fox on camera last night so I am concerned even though I lock them in tight at night.

so i’ve been having a really bad day...ive always wanted chickens so a few months ago i started doing research and bought a coop and supplies. i made the mistake of buying chicks online and shopping them in from far away and it didn’t go well. i ordered 7 chicks and only 2 were alive when they came, and they died a few days later. that made me super sad so i wasn’t sure if i wanted to try again, but i found a local hatchery and bought 3 healthy chicks. and for the past couple months i’ve been raising them and buying them toys and hanging out with them all the time. they were growing up and about to start laying eggs and their adult feathers were coming in so beautiful and today i found out they were killed in the night by a raccoon. i guess it figured out how to open the latch and got in. i’m extremely upset and i don’t know what to do. i feel like a failure.
We all deal with predators of some sort, often lots of different kinds and we often suffer losses before we realize what all we have to do to protect our flocks. You are NOT a failure, don't give up. research predators in your area and prepare your coop and run, If you are allowed, get a rooster, they are a great help in protecting your flock. Don't give up, chickens are so worth it. :hugs

Awww :(
I'm sorry you've had such a rough start, so sad. I feel for you :hugs And as so many of us do, I have my share of sad chicken raising stories, too. It's true...it comes with the hobby (we learn as we go).

Of course you're sad...but try not to beat yourself up about it <3

That is just terrible. I am so sorry for your chickens and for you. You were raising them, and I bet they were pretty tame. Such a tough and costly lesson. You are very resilient. :hugsI hope you don't give up the chickens...chicken people are pretty resilient, and maybe this sort of thing is why.... in any case, welcome to our club and we hope you get some new chicks and fix up your coop. Once you get set up properly, this sort of thing does not happen as much although predators are a part of chickenry.
