My chickens won't go into their coop at night, how can I help them?

Hello everyone, Sam here.

I have around 45 or so chickens as to date, with about six or seven broody hens sitting maybe 20 more. Now, we had kept most our chickens in two coops, one big another small, and our houses storage unit. Of course, not liking how it kept getting dirty in there, we made an add-on to the big coop. It was basically like our others, one door for us to go in and them to come out, three or four different sized roost, and about four nest boxes. Now I remember that I heard somewhere that if you lock your chickens up in their coop for three days and nights, they will think of it as home. I had done this when we made our other two and it worked great, they go in at night every night. So we put the 19 or so chickens into the new coop, and locked them up with food and water for three days. We let them out this morning, same time we did the others, and they went about the day like they normally would have. But when night came, everyone else went in, but any of the chickens in the new coop.* We ended up having to catch them and put them in there again. Once they were in, they got on the roosts at stayed, but we could never get them to go in themselves.

*They went to the door where their old home was. But it was closed so they couldn't get in and they just waited by it.

Long story short, sorry, is there any way to get our chickens to go into their coop at night, without having to go through the painstaking process of catching them all? Any idea is welcome.
Thank you.
Sam

i wish i had an answer for you, but all of a sudden i am trouble with my chickens going in the coop at night! we let them free range during the day and two days ago they have discovered a new place to roost, on top of a wishing well! oow they seem to think they can sleep outside of the coop! it's a pain to catch them the last two nights! any suggestions would be welcome!

We actually had a problem similar to that at one point with our old coop. It might help to get some flimsy chicken wire or something of the like, and enclose off the area around the well. Just enough so they can't get to stand on it. They might realize that the coop is easier and safer.
Hope it helps.

That is a great idea, i put a board across the well part, but they laid on the board! Tomorrow I will drape the fencing over it, thanks so much for the idea!

We have problems with our younger birds (3 to 4 months) log jamming at the door each night. We don't chase them, we started using a wide plastic leaf rake to help us get them to go inside their coop. We are able to gently walk the rake behind the young birds and guide them into their pen, kind of like using a stick when working cattle. Only we are a lot more gentle with the chickens. LoL!!! I think they will eventually catch on to where they are supposed to be. Good Luck!!
