My chickies <3

Sadly, just before Christmas, we lost 3 hens in our flock. A new neighbor, 2 doors down, has 2 chained dogs and one indoor dog who wander but doesn't chase chickens. One of the chained dogs slipped her collar and came over. We got home well after dark from Christmas shopping without the kid. When I went to put them to bed, only 2 were in the coop rafters (10"x10" modified shed). I found the dog burying one of our dead hens. I got a hold of her and confined her while I looked for the others. I found another dead hen and a hen who had been shaken. I put her back in the coop. The owner of the dogs was not home so I chained her back up to the hell hole she lived in. The following morning, our rooster was crowing, uninjured next door. When I tucked them in that evening, another hen had returned also uninjured. We never found our BR, Egglivia. RIP Amelia, Poppy, and Egglivia:( We were heartbroken!!!

After placing a "Missing Chicken" ad on Craigslist, I received a phone call from a lady who lives on the road south of us (a mile south). She was looking to rehome her 4 hens who had stopped laying this year. She didn't want to kill them. After taking a few days to discuss it with the family, we decided to adopt them. She didn't know what breed but here's my guess. Barred rock, black sex link OR copper marans (molting), golden nugget, Easter egger. Thoughts? Hoping they will mix well with our flock.

Sorry about the losses to your flock. I hope your new chickens adjust well. The breed guesses sound good from what I can tell. Could the golden one be a Buff Orpington? Who knows they may start laying for you occasionally in the spring.

I thought buff was more tan but very possibly? I'm new to chickens and am just guessing;) she is orange and has some brown on the ends of her tail, if that helps. She the largest hen in the flock.

Here is one of my photos of a Buff Orpington. The breed has white or pinkish legs and they are quite friendly, especially when you have treats. I have one Buff Orpington hen who has some black coloring in a few of her tail feathers.

I hope you all stay warm enough. I am happy that there are no more below zero temps forecast for the rest of the week here in lower Michigan.
