Easter morning! What better time for chicks to hatch?? I ordered 20 in February, and ship date is tomorrow, so they should be hatching right now. I hope and pray that they make it here without problems. I have talked to the post office people twice and told them they are coming, and believe me, I will be calling them if they don't call me. I probably won't sleep all night. I'm off to put the finishing touches on the brooder, which I have modified since last year.

SO COOL! I can't wait for pictures! What do you think of Cackle hatchery? I really like it even though I haven't ever ordered from it, but what do you think of it?

Last year's chicks came from Cackle, although I bought them at local feed store (actually ordered through them, but had my choice of breeds, etc.). All were healthy one-day-olds, although when I got there at 8 am, the feed store guy had them all out in a big open garage, still in boxes, temp about 40 degrees. The chirping was deafening. I put mine in the car right away, and as soon as they got warmed up they quieted down. They've done fine. They're now a year old and all laying beautifully. I don't know how all the others did, especially the ones who didn't get picked up right away and got chilled.

The feed store used to be a gas station, and the big bay doors were open and the chicks were stacked all over in there. I think he should have done a little more to keep them warm, but that's just my HUMBLE opinion. I would have at least closed the overhead doors and had some type of heater going in there.

This year, I just ordered directly from Cackle, since I wanted more than the minimum.
