My Chicks are six weeks old, When can they go outside?

Quote:
I am in So Cal. I have been putting my 3 week old chicks outside in an pen on the back lawn, late morning, for the last 5 days. It is about 80-85F. A couple of days ago it was over 90F in the sun. I had to give them a little shade. Made a few roosts with branches, and put their food and water in as well. Scattered some food and grit in the grass
I bring them in when it starts to get cool..
They are some happy little birds ! They were starting to get sort of squakky and restless in the brooder all day. All that goes away when they get out.

Am I taking chances? Is it too soon?

As long as they're not complaining (i.e. peeping that shrill peep that hurts your ears), they're happy & content.

Our babies, all of a sudden, have feathers all over even on their heads! I guess that means 'feathered out'

I'm quite ready for them to go outside-we just have to put up the mesh to section off their area of the shed. Maybe tomorrow!

They are currently in the basement, which worked out ok, but it is a tad messy.

I put my chickens out at almost 5 weeks into the coop in the barn- they used a heat lamp until the weather stayed above freezing at night- theyre a little over 6 weeks old now.

Theyre just fine.

I let my 5wk olds out in the run today. such fun. It was 70+ degrees here. Up and down thats spring for sure. On Mon nite of this coming wk it is going to be in the 20s yikes. I give them a heat lamp at night and no drafts they are doing well. Jean

My 2 babies spent the whole day outside today - first time! They were penned up to protect the from the big girls, only one of whom was interested in them. The babies are 3 1/2 weeks old and loved being outside. Today the temp was ~60 & sunny with just a slight breeze.
