They are too cute and yes they will LOVE being outside. I rig up little runs and put mine outside on the grass in the sunshine from day one if it's hot and from 2 weeks old if it's 70 or more. They love it so much that they start throwing little pipping fits in the morning if I don't let them out and they will run from me, little buggers, when I try to put them up at end of day so I rig a run around their chick-n-hutch and they put themselves to bed at sundown, just like the big girls. And yes, you can use hay or straw for bedding.

There going to be sad tommarrow because it is going to be raining. I am going to buy some hay then, is it bad if they eat the real small seeds off the hay.

I've put mine on hay, in a cardboard box, from the moment they hatch - they love it. I've raised 4 batches over last year and never a problem. I also scatter their food on top of the hay and let them scratch for it when I can't let them out of their pen or brooder box. Keeps them occupied for hours. You should see their little legs digging and finding the feed in bottom of box and acting like they found the prize worm.

They look so happy. I can't wait to get mine outside, but the temps have barely topped 60 at the warmest around here and the 'girls' aren't quite 3 weeks old yet. Either it will warm up a bit or they'll feather out more and then I can put them out in the sun for a bit on one of the warmer days. On the bright side, my crocuses are blooming and my tulips, hyacinths and daffodils are about 2 inches tall...spring is on the way

I just let them out since it did not rain or not much. Our bushs, flowers, fruit trees are blooming. My chickens ate most of the flowers and vegtables last year. We might have to build a fence to keep them in when the gardens growing and were own vacation.
