My chicks don't seem to like the piece of wood across the bottom of

their brooder.
It's maybe 1/2 inch all around and it stretches all the way across the brooder. It is MAYBE one inch off the ground.
 
If I recall correctly, chicks are not very interested in roosting until they're at least 2 wks old or so.

They'll play on it for a long time before they start to actually "roost."
 
I put a dowel in the brooders.. they mostly play on it. Jump over it, go under it. One walks it like a tightrope. My older chicks didn't start using it to roost on until they were like 4ish weeks or so. Now they're outside, and sleep on the wood chips instead of the pole! I guess as long as they're comfy!
 
I use a limb off of a cottonwood tree. I put them on it once a day, and they seem to figure it out after a while.
