My cinnamon queens

Well as i said before the girls are laying now a couple eggs a day. would like to get a rooster for them and was surprised to hear that the cq's are a crossbreed between silver laced wyandotte hen and a new hampshire rooster. I am looking for a good breed of rooster for my hens, not really interested in chicks rite now just want a good friendly rooster for my ladies. Am looking at a buff orpington tmw. What do ya'll think. He's a young rooster not yet crowing I'm told by the seller who I bought my cq's from as pullets. Heard with this breed of chickens (the cq's) there are roosters but they're white. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Take care n thanking you in advance for your time, Rick

If you decide to breed your sexlinks, you'd be wise to consider a strong breed, such as the Buff Orp you are considering.

Since your hybrids carrying both the red and white gene of their parent stock, breeding them with another Sex Link rooster produces rather spotty results. Good layers, but color wise? A mottled affair.

I think a Buff Orpington would be an outstanding choice, personally.

Thank you for the response.At this time we are not going to breed them.That is something I'd rather not get into,Tho friends have told me they said that too,But I have alot to learn before I start anything like that.I'm leaving in a bit to go get the rooster.He is younger then the hens, but I'm told they will be ok together.Once again thank you for your time,and take care.

I'm not really sure what your goals are for the rooster. If it is personality, it really varies by the individual, though breed can sometimes make a difference. I don't know what your other options are, but I'd think the Orpington would make a good choice.

I understand you are not considering hatching chicks yet, but don't be surprised if that changes when you get more comfortable with your chickens. It is true that the Cinnamon Queens are a cross that creates a red sex link chick. The down color when they hatch is yellow for the boys and reddish for the girls so you can tell sex when they hatch. That is very convenient if you only want girls. If you breed them to any rooster, you will get a variety of colors and patterns in the chicks. They are officially mutts, but unless you are into showing them or have some other reason to want purebreeds, I find nothing wrong with mutts. Ignore the turkey in the photo. The others are mainly second generation crosses from Speckled Sussex, Delaware, Black Australorp, and Buff Orpington. I kind of like them. The two up front, the speckled rosoter and the brown on white pullet will probably become additions to my laying/breeding flock.

Had no goals with the rooster,just wanted one ,heard if you ever did let your chickens out,he would keep em in line ,but don't know the truth to that,right now their in a nice coop and good size run.I kinda just wanted to hear him crow each morn,tho i light out at 5:30 and my wife sleeps in till seven.So I guess she'll get to enjoy it for me( lol )as here in central Arkansas its dawn around the time I leave.
Now the down side of buffs introduction to the six ladies.He is a couple months younger then them,i thought he was around their age.The breeder we picked him up from said he would be fine.Upon placing him in the pen they jumped him like hyenas on a fallen prey,chasing him into the corner pouncing on top of him and preceded to peck on his head like he was an ex who had done all of em wrong,pressing him to the ground and pecking away.(And I was told CQ's are docile.)
My wife is hollering their going to kill him,so i go in run them to the other side of the pen and shut the door.So much for the introduction.So I call my buddy who laughed and said he found this quite comical, said they'll get use to him after awhile.He said it was 5 bucks anyway, they kill him go get another one,maybe and older one this time and bigger,funny.Me,I like the guy and want to keep him around.I did tell the ladies when he grows up they'll rue this day,but that didn't have much effect.
Now he is in the run with his own water and feed and the ladies are in the coop with theirs,I tried a couple of times to open the door and let them mingle,But when he got near their water or food it was on again,I had a chance to buy a buff that was a year old but thought he might be too agressive ,HAH,wished I'd of got him now.Just kidding ,so my friends where do i go from here??I Don't really like leaving him out in the run ,tho it has good fencing and bird netting over the top he will be safe and we have clear skies for tonight.But I don't think placing them in the coop tonite is an option.Its 16'x8' so its not like they could'nt stay on their side of the bed ,there are roosts on each end and the nesting boxes in the middle.If You have any advice on this ,please let me know.And Thanks....once again.

I do think you should keep him separated but visible if you can at least for a few days and see how they do free ranging together in the yard. If you could put him in a dog crate in the coop with girls the first night that would be best...either that or wait until night and put him on the roost with the girls while they were asleep and keep an eye on them in the morning.

Did the latter, oozed him back in the coop while the girls were roosting.I get up early anyway and will see how they're acting in the morn,thanks for the link to the post about this.It seems this is not uncommon for hens to act this way .once again thanks and take care.

sorry you had so much trouble with your rooster introduction. (Kind of sorry for the poor little fellow too--it sounds quite painful and scarey for a new arrival) Hope everything works out for you.

Wow--what beautiful chickens. There are some very interesting patterns there. But they are random chickens, I take it, or 'mutts' as you say, does that mean that they really are of completely unknown parentage.

There is a slight complication. A couple are from the same rooster but the mother is a red EE of totally unknown parentage. The EE is the little red one behind the rosoter.

Thanks for your best wishes on the rooster ,been checking on him and he is roosting on one end and the ladies on the other.peaceful night i hope.And ridge they are some fine looking chickens.I have alot to learn ya'll.Thanks for the help.Also tho not for this thread,how can i post pics to what i post? i tried (img) but I must be doing something wrong.Would like to show ya'll pics of the ladies and the little guy too!!please advise ,Take care and goodnight.
