My 2 year-old, 7 pounds, standard silver-laced Cochin hen is sick. She is standing still, she doesn't want to go outside. She hasn't been roosting for the past 3 nights, and this morning she was moving very slowly. All the other chickens are energetic, and lively, she has lost some weight during the past 2-3 days. We checked her for any signs of bleeding, she didn't have any near her bottom. She has normal poop. We have given her water that had nutri-drench in it, also some strawberries. She hasn't eaten or drunk much either. We need some help figuring out what is wrong with her.

I recommend you inspect her for lice/mites. You might consider worming your chickens if you havnt done so.

Does anyone know what could be wrong with her? I hope she doesn `t die. Do you think she could be eggbound? Just a week ago she was perfectly normal, but the past 4 days she been sick.

Check for eggbinding..... Try to keep her eating and drinking. What wormer did you use? Is she pale around her face? Could also be an internal infection... but it is hard to know w/o tests. Keep her warm and separated from others.. try some scrambled egg or some warm mushy dog food

I have been giving her muchy chicken feed, but i will try dog food and scrambled eggs. We use Wazine wormer that we get at the local feed store. She does not seem pale around her face. We did put some vitamins in her water. We just seperated her from the rest of the flock. What does eggbind mean? Is it the same as Eggbound?

Wazine only kills round worms. Safeguard kills many others but not external lice and mites, Ivomec kills lice, mites and many types of worms, but not to be used on very sickly birds as it can make them weaker. I would dose her with some Safeguard, liquid goat type 1cc per 10 lbs, hose paste 1 pea size for adult standard bird. You can also mix liquid Safe guard 3cc per gallon, but in her case I'd give her some directly. If still no improvement i'd try a shot of penicillian or give some amoxicillian. Yes Egg binding is Egg bound.....

thanks, where do i get safe guard? I currently have some penicillian with me, do i only use it after the wormer?

Safeguard you can get at any feed store or TSC. It comes in either a liquid for goats or a paste for horses. Safeguard is pretty safe, so a shot of penicillian shouldn't hurt.

Thank you so much, I will go get the safe guard at TSC tomorrow.
