I don't think there is anything to worry about. Feathers get frayed, bent and fall out. But it is hard to know exactly what you are talking about without a picture.

Tail to the side could be wry tail. Not ideal for breeding but not a big deal for standard quality of life.

What does your roost look like, where he roosts? I would guess, that he is spending hours a night, with the feathers turned to the side.
