I think my 7 year old Compaq finally bit the dust. It isn't advancing through start-up (normal, but none of my fixes are working) and it isn't registering the key board, so I can't communicate with it either. Tried another keyboard, nothing. We started replacing parts on it several months ago, but I think it's pretty well done. I know it had some kind of virus on it I or the scan couldn't find and quarentine.

Soo, who has Vista? Is that what they're selling with towers now? I was still on XP, not excited about switching. Course I said that about W98 too but ended up liking XP better.

The laptop is still kicking, on that now. I don't care for laptops. But this machine is a beast, has been to Iraq twice, survived lot's of moves, trips, crashes, sand, all kinds of things. Have only replaced the screen and battery pack. Down to 2 working USB drives and the internet cord thing is busted so it's wireless only. But hey, it's still fast and functional.

Was thinking of going to Micro Center and getting their top of the line store brand tower. I can't recall the name. My inlaws have always had dell, and they don't get much longevity out of them. Might be user error though. People said all kinds of bad things about my compaq but it survived countless virus attacks and system restores. LOL

Mine is a Dell... we got it back in 2001. Slower than dirt sometimes, had to be restored a few times, and can't handle some newer gadgets but hey, it works. I only have XP, think DH and DS have Vista and they like it.

DON'T get Vista
"Windows Vista, an operating system released by Microsoft in November 2006, has received substantial criticism by reviewers and users. Due to issues with privacy, security, performance, and product activation, Windows Vista has been the subject of a number of negative assessments by various groups."
Get windows 7

Oh I forgot about W7! I thought they had put another out after Vista, I had heard complaints about Vista. Can't believe I forgot about that, brain crash right along with the computer.

As far as brands go, stay away from HP and Dell. I've had nothing but bad luck with them.

For desktops, I prefer to build my own custom PCs. If you want to buy a desktop I'd go with Powerspec (Micro center house brand) or check out www.newegg.com

I just had to buy one, dang it, good closing next week and $400 is GONE . . .but i buy from a girl who builds them from scratch and so far so good. Has Windows XP and I like it, know how to use it and it has the programs that my small needs are able to handle. I do like the looks of the W 7 or whatever that is . . .the idea of having two screens up at the same time to work off of really intrigues me as I do appraisals and to be able to have the info sheet on the comparison I am using next to the form I have to fill out would make my work zip right thru!!

We had an HP for years and LOVED it, had nothing but good things to say about it. Dell is ok, but their memory is squat and you have to pay for every little extra thing they do to it for you. But, I don't complain as if its all you got, its better than nothing. DD had an Emachine and had really good luck with it, but it gently tipped over when she was moving and burned up the power board or whatever, so we all stay away from them too because of that. Or at least she said that is the only thing she can think of that happened that could have done it, and she is a geek so probably knows.

I love my HP computer and laptop. Great things to say about it!

I love the XP more than Vista but it took some time getting used to the Vista and I like it...you can open several screens at one time like reading BYC while waiting for FB games to upload or typing emails while reading from another website.

It's pretty FAST too!

I do not know of the longetivity on computers and laptops. My computer in the other room is roughly five years old and laptop is well over a year old.
