My Coop and Run

Sweet little home for your gang.Yes,def black sexy's.Ive got 2 and they are identical. The portability of a movable coop is important.I plan on making a smaller coop soon so the momma's can get around.I still dont completely free range.I am very insecure about leaving my guys out of there prison all day when im not here.Lol:)

Ya, I tried to make the coop blend as much as possible, with a muted color (versus the barn red and bright white I wanted to do). I definitely need to do the overhang. Who knew our end-of-July weather would stink so bad, though?

Ya, whoever thought the window up deserves some credit!

I'll need to look at them closer now. I'm not educated on their combs, but Giggles definitely has a larger one than Clucks, which is how we tell them apart. I'll take a closer look tonight when I get home.

It's interesting that everyone says Black Sex Links, because that was one the woman never mentioned. However, I just went to feathersite.com, and I would say that Black Sex Links would describe them perfectly.

Any feedback on these as a breed? Temperment? Egg laying?

Thanks again for the positive comments. I was beginning to think I'd never get done!

Love your coop! So neat and tidy. But I *really* love your rabbits...because we have rabbits mingling with chickens, too. In fact, we have a spotted mini rex who looks just like yours! Pretty funny to him in YOUR photos!

Susan (still in the midst of building a coop--but the posts are in!)

If one does have a pea comb, as far as I know, that would make it an Easter Egger, probably crossed with ... something black.
I think this is a crappy picture of a buttercup comb cause you cant really see that what it looks like.
Anyway, I cant see the combs all that well so this is probably useless info.

Dave, I really like that illustration. Thanks for posting it!

Also, chickaboom, I'm glad to see you thought about putting a chair in your coop. We were going to build something rather small (kind of like a chick'n'hut), but then realized that the kids (and I!) wouldn't be able to hang out inside the coop with the hens. Having raised them from chickhood, that would be quite a loss! (We're going to keep our chair outside the coop though, just to avoid having it get all poopy.)

Nice graphic Barg! :) I'm going with Single Comb for both, but by the time I got back out there tonight to look, Clucks had put herself to bed.

Hensnchix: We really enjoy having the rabbits out there with the hens - it adds a little extra action, and they are fun to watch. We actually let them out in our yard quite a bit to run free, and will likely do that with the hens eventually.

In regards to the chair, it is actually a wooden step stool from the kids' younger days that was with a load of stuff I took to the Goodwill a few weeks ago. As you can see, I saw value in it, and kept it for the run.

Following advice from others, I kept it upside down in the run at first, so that any poop would be on the underside, but now I keep it next to the coop for when needed.

I wanted to be able to hang in there as well, but was torn between making the run 6' tall, but too in-your-face for the neighbors, or making it 4' tall, but not easily accessible. I finally settled on a compromise plan of 4' high with lift out roof panels. It isn't perfect - the door doesn't open and shut easily because the wall on that side moves freely - but it allows me to stand or sit as desired.

Thanks again!

Finally got the finishing touch done for my chicken area. There are still other little things to do, but who has time when you are busy cleaning up all the poop?

Anyhow, probably like a number of people, this play on words passed through my mind some time ago, and I often mentally chanted it on my more stressful days at work. Needless to say, it deserved to be written.
