My coop area smells

I have a coop and a little fenced in area around it to allow for free ranging. The problem I am experiencing is that the area really smells. Is there something I can put down that will minimize the smell without hurting the hens?

Maybe lime - or, you can turn it over then spread lime

The smell may be coming because it is wet. You may want to look at this link.

The other possibility is that you have too many chickens for the area to handle itself. You may need to rake and remove the poop.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions. I am in the Northeast, so it has been extremely wet lately. As soon as it dries out I will turn and lime the area.

There's no need to wait.

Just spread some AG lime (Calcium Carbonate) on top and let the chickens work it in for you.

Don't use Hydrated Lime. (Calcium Hydroxide)​
