I did just that about an hour before shutting everyone in for bed. We had to physically take them out of the cage. Then we secured the door open with bricks and observed. You could rig the door to be open just enough that only the youngers can get in and out.
Carmen, OE, is the most active about going after the babies. She goes for the smallest. Matilda and Kitkit, Leghorn and Legbar, are also actively pecking. Bunny, BCM, is the least. She doesn't seem to care at all. After a bit the littles started finding their way inside the cage. The biggies looked but so far haven't tried to get inside. We left it propped open tonight so I hope I find everyone in good shape in the morning. I'm going to continue to leave food and water inside the coop till I'm sure the littles can be locked out of the cage. However I won't put the food and water in the cage so they will have to leave the cage to eat and drink.
Wish me luck!
