My crap coop lol does it need more ventilation?

I've had raccoons dig UNDER the chickenwire and pry it up to get into the run. This was buried at least a foot deep under the dirt. Thankfully the coop door (that my husband said didn't need a latch of any kind because only the chickens would use it) had a latch (that I insisted on anyway, to my husband's displeasure), and the raccoon couldn't get into the coop after all his trouble digging under the fence.

So yes, you can definitely not be too careful.

Good racoons are all around here but the are scared of us :P

Raccoons are huge jerks. I have no use for them except hats and sinew. Honestly. They eat our crawdads in the stream, and our nice little frogs too, I hate them.

Yeah they can break some of the crappier brands of chicken wire. They can also open most latches. Put latches up high or use padlock hasps, and cheapo locks.

Good luck~!~

So do you guys use hardware cloth just by itself or put it over another type of fence?

Hardware cloth should be fine. If you double up the chicken wire it's fine. But by that time, you might as well buy the hardware cloth. Most dogs can tear down the netting type chicken wire. It's a lighter gauge. Chicken wire is a tough call. I like the hardware cloth for the coop. Chicken wire is just too iffy. With the hardware cloth you KNOW nothing is getting in.
