My dad wants to know if... *HELP PLEASE*

Food grade DE as a duster... and re do in 10 days... also sprinkle in dry bedding... Only food grade... you may use poor on Ivermectin made for cattle.. Not for injectable kind...only the pore on. there are directions on this site somewhere... you use it like flea drops but it is only a few drops per chicken between thier wings... ON THE SKIN... Not on the feathers... must reach the skin... works fabulously.

I let the sevin spray dry before I let the silkies and youngins back in the cage thing. It's a huge cage don't worry, by huge I mean like about the size of a small room. I do change out the bedding, I turn the shavings and poop into fertilizer then I put new shavings. I do this quite alot, and with the standards/grown up chickens as well. I don't know if my parents will pay for expensive stuff. It's very likely that they won't. I don't if it's eating feathers, all I know is her skin is super dry and flaky and some of the feathers come right out.

OH- I thought you were spraying a bunch of Sevin spray on your chicken. Whew.

Okay that's very nice that there's all these things but may someone answer my question? Is it alright to use a lice shampoo for people on a chicken? Or Hartz Flea and Tick Shampoo for dogs cats puppies whatevers on a chicken? It sounds like we'd have to go to town to get these things and if I could drive and had money I would get these things but can we use stuff we already have? My dad said that it's better for our silkie to have a rash then to have lice, you know if it gave her a rash. It's either I let her infest the flock or I bathe her.
My dad said that not all animals will get a reaction, some will some won't. I know there's these DE food things and dusts and sprays, okay? But we aren't rich and my parents don't like paying for gas money for something that is not needed. So what's better to use, the people shampoo or the dog one?

Moochi,
I do not have the answer....but am going to go to work to find it..
Hang in there.
You have made it clear that expensive things like ivomectrin is not in your budget..so I do not understand why people are telling you things that are not an option for you.
Anyway..your a sweetie.wish you lived closer so I could help more.
Don't give up one folks here.the answer will come.might just take a bit.

Moochi,
I typed lice control in search and found a bunch of information.
Some said to use Adams flea and tick for dogs..........Have not found ingredients for Hartz.
Could you repost and head it."Can I use Hartz flea and lice medication on my chicken?"
I'll keep looking

Hartz is pyrethrin/permethrin- it shouldn't work any better than the poultry dust you are already using. You may have some sort of resistant bug, but usually sevin dust (carbaryl) will kill the lice fast. How old are your products? are they really old? they should be working- if these are the standard common poultry louse. Tell me what the active ingredient is in the human shampoo for lice--- then I can probably tell you if it is ok for the chicken.

DE is not going to kill the lice if pyrethrin and carbaryl didn't.

I would first check to see if there is an expiration date on the things you have- sevin really should have worked if you put it on generously & have reapplied every 2 weeks.

Thank yaz everybody... They are not that old. I did notice on the sevin dust bottle cylinder thing was wrinkled (the paper) but I think that was from the rain, the garden area is outside.
I'll check the Hartz and the people kind. Is the dust supposed to kill the eggs too? When my mom washed Gertrude a while back with just warm water and epsom salt she said she saw the little buggies in the water. After that Gertrude was fine but applying the sevin what nots. My mom says she didn't see the eggs though. If I do wash Gertrude do I cover her eyes with something? The eggs are EVERYWHERE on her including her beard and (muffs?). And I don't to sting her eyes... She sure is a homely looking girl.
Gertrude also had scaly leg mites when we first bought her, after a few soakings in warm water and epsom salt her feet got really better. They still look, um, strange though.
