My Dark Cornish project

7/31

I did the weigh in tonight. I was able to tell that 53, 55 and 56 are Rooster. 55 bit or tried to bite me at least 5 times and is making an impressive lead in the first one to be taste tested. He is under weight of 53 and 56 and very mean. 56 is looking like the gene's I want so far too.

That is exactly what to do with the most annoying rooster, (taste) test him first!;)

Week 10
So, The only change tonight besides being bigger is 50 was a fighting hen and didn't want to get weighed. 55 bite me last week and is apparently making reparations and not wanting to be taste tested, but he better start growing 56 and 62 got him hands down in size. Only two Roo's stay, so the competition starts here. The hens is an all out keep unless some show weakness or small sizes.

Just so you know this is being followed I thought I would post something.. I have dark Cornish in my incubator now. I bought the eggs from the same guy a year ago but it was Mail Order and they didn't make it, this time I messaged the guy to let him know I would pick them up in person. Keep us posted on your measurements.

11 Weeks, a bit feistier and harder to keep in the bowl to weight. One jumped out and broke the plastic bowl. There has to be a better way. Or these are just some feisty chickens.
Are you putting a bowl on a flat kitchen scale? I would suggest using a box instead. Find a box that's as small as possible while fitting the bird inside, and put a coffee cup or small bowl upside down on the scale and tare it (assuming at this point the size box needed will be bigger than the scale area). Then set the box on the cup to weigh. Just keep your hands ready to catch/steady the box in case they shuffle, but being in the dark should get them calm enough to get a good read.

Yea, I am setting the tare and I thought they were getting used to it. The little bastages are good escape artists and several trying to bite me. Kicking and scratching, I hope they are this good if predators show up. I went over at 8:15 and maybe they weren't all settled down yet. I need a headlamp anyways, probably need to wait longer next time.

The bowl works better because a box would block the display were a bowl sweeps up to see it.

Compost, your chicks died before, or right now?
