We have chicks about a week old and we let them outside to graze a little. My daughter didn’t realize the chick was by her foot and stepped on her. She has a very swollen right leg and she’s just laying down. We’ve separated her from the other chicks. What can we do? Thank you!

Could it be that her leg is broken? If you feel her leg, do you feel any abnormality, other than it being swollen? Can she stand on the leg at all?
I think so. This is our first go round with chicks so I know nothing! She can’t stand on it. Just wants to lay down. If I pick her up and put her down she just holds the leg up and doesn’t move it at all

When a friend of mine accidentally stepped on my ducks foot, I taped 2 popsicle sticks with a piece of gauze or masking tape and she turned out fine. My duck broke her leg and it healed after I made her a “cast.” Best of luck, hope it helps.

I would let her be for a few days and see if she starts to stand on the leg. If she does not improve, then I would recommend bringing her to a vet if that's possible. If you can't take her to a vet, you can try creating a makeshift splint to hold the bones in place.
