My DD has Scarlet Fever!

It's just a variant on strep throat.... She's on antibiotics and will no longer be contagious 24 hrs after the start of antibiotics.

I knew what it was right away, but it surely did freak the school nurse out!! Wahoooo!

I didnt know it was still around either! Cant it affect the heart? Best wishes on fast recovery for your DD!

If left untreated it can cause myriad issues, the same with regular strep throat. If strep is left untreated (especially in children), it can develop into rheumatic fever which is truly bad.

This can be bad (and the rash is pretty gnarly), but I think that it was caught early enough. *crosses fingers*

Thanks for the well wishes everyone!

My DS had scarlet fever when he was younger. It is just strep throat with a rash and the strawberry tongue. Not a big deal these days. Same antibiotic you'd take with strep throat. Hope she feels better soon.

Since she was 5, my youngest has gotten strep twice a year, and half of those times she's had the rash, too.
This is the first year we've made it through fall/winter with NO strep/sf! WooHoo!
