She will probably always remember it, but it is life. My husband accidently killed his dad's favorite bantam hen as a kid. He actually just stepped back and stepped on the chickens head. Total accident but it was his dad's reaction that he still remembers. You did well in doing the funeral and hopefully helping her realize that it was an accident, and the whole circle of life thing... Don't let her shy away from the other chickens though, she doesn't need to develop any fears...

I hope the sister hen gets over her loss too....soo sad for both those little girls!!!

I hope your daughter and your other hen can both heal. I hope you find the eggs you are looking for. I am keeping you and your daughter in my prayers.

Oh my gosh I am so so sorry for you all. If you had moved to Kentucky I would be driving a new baby right over to your DD. That is so hard. Tell her to take very good care of Amber and make sure she is eating and drinking....give her a job to do with her sister. Let her feed Amber treats and such. This will help DD and also Amber who is mourning her sister.

Thanks so much for the support and well wishes folks. We are doing much better. DD and Amber are healing and DD has been doing extra treats and hugs for Amber and she has responded well

DS has been lending his sister his bird so that they can feel better and he has been 'borrowing' my bird Cleopatra. They are SO sweet with how they are dealing with it. They wanted to bury Amber so that her body could feed the ground and be of use somewhere. I had to get them each a tail feather to remember her by and I am going to do a framed photo with the feathers in there too. Still very sad at times. I am hoping one of the girls will go broody soon so that we can get some eggs under them. I know the chicks will be a great distraction - just got to wait for them to oblige, they just finished with being broody. In fact Amber isn't laying again yet and Cleopatra has just started laying again. I know they go broody pretty regularly, but I can't remember how often. Hopefully they will go broody at the same time and we can have lots of chicks buzzing around. They seem to get broody at about the same time so let hope next time too... will have to leave some golf balls lying around in the nesting box to encourage them

I am SOOOO sorry for you both! I'm SO sorry for your poor DD... There's NOTHING worse than seeing someone you love die/dead.

Oh, that is traumatic... Losing birds to accidents like that is always hard, no matter what age you are. My thoughts are with your daughter, I am so sorry about her Pearl. These birds can really catch your heart... I don't know how many tears I've shed over my chickens, too many to ever count, but I've smiled ten times as much. Tell your daughter she is a good person for loving her Pearl so much, and that sometimes accidents happen no matter how careful we are.

It was so surprising to me to find how attached I got to the chickens in the beginning! I really thought they were just stupid, useful birds.... until I got some of my own and was astounded to see the distinct personalities emerge and how funny they can be. I have to agree - I have shed some bitter tears over some birds and yet I have done a lot of laughing and smiling over them. I had to try very hard when Pearl died to not just fall apart myself.... I couldn't believe that I was holding this sweet little birds corpse when just moments before she was snuggling up to DD and tootling around the pen chomping grubs. And seeing the gory mess of her little head -

- it was like watching a horror movie.... It is so different when you process a bird that you knew all along was destined for the freezer, it is quick and really not gory at all (not that I can bring myself to do it - DH gets that job ) but seeing a little pet smashed... boy I can't get that picture out of my mind,
