My dirty little secret!!

I support you 100%! I'm not a smoker, never have been. I have really bad allergies and the smoke only worsens it. My b/f has smoked since he was 13 too, says he wants to quit, but I don't think he really does. He went to cheap cigars claiming that they're nasty and it'll make him cut down, but now he smokes them as much as he did the cigarettes. It causes mild problems between us because I truely can't be around him until he baths, but even so you can't get rid of that smell in his breath no matter how much he brushes and rinses with mouth wash. It's a nasty smell that smokers just don't realize they have. He thinks I'm lying when I say that it causes me physical distress, but I'm not. That hurts. But what can I do?

My parents had an old friend that smoked for 60 years, he said that one day he decided that he was tired of being sick and decided he was quiting cold turkey. He was having trouble though. His wife always kept a bowl of oranges on the dining table (we're from FL) and he grabbed one to eat one day and then lit up right after, he said the citrus made his cigarette so nasty that he couldn't finish it. So everytime he wanted to light up, he'd grab and orange and eat it. When he lit up, he couldn't finish it so within a week he was through with smoking and never lit up again. Don't know if it can work for you but it's an idea.

Congratulations for being so brave and SMART!! the money you save and the time you are adding to your life are so worth it. I grew up with smokers and remember whenever my friends would come spend the night, their parents would make them take a shower as soon as they got home to get the smell off of them. It embarrassed me. I never started and neither did my siblings. My husband smokes and I just think it's gross. I can't stand to go into the garage (his smoking lair). Ugh.

I'm proud of you!!

Hold on, hold on....

Does money saved from quitting smoking = more chickens?!

i was raised in a family of smokers. my mother smoked thru every pregnancy.surprisingly tho i didn't start till i was 21 and on my own.
Anyway the way i did it was to go outside for every smok.NEVER smoke inside rain snow bitter cold.also cut downby one or two aday. till just after meal. also took a lot will power. iam so glad i quit and like some one said. now i can tell who smokes just by walking past them. smokers just don't smell well.....sorry.

I to started when I was 13, it really must be an unlucky number. I hate to admit it but I still smoke. I know I know, don't say it, I get it every day from DH ( non smoker), when I get ready to quit I hope I have the will power to do it. Even myself as a smoker knows it a nasty habit, but continue to do it. Oh and I smoke out side too and it doesn't stop me. I'm with MBLayfield I hate to smoke, I love to smoke.

I quit smoking Jan. 15, 2001 after my doctor told me I had breast cancer and it had already spread to my lungs. After years of him telling me to quit, he told me to not bother any more. It took almost a year of tests, operations and countless specialists to finally tell me "You don't have cancer and never did." After living almost a year thinking I was not long for this world and at a very high level of anxiety, I went into deep depression when I was told I was not going to die. I started smoking again and have been on antidepressants since. I really would like to quit for good but have not found the will power yet.

My pulmonologist offered me a perscription for a new pill they have out that works on the receptors in the brain. It is suppose to stop the addictive craving for nicotene. It has a very high success rate. It is also very expensive. One day I WILL give it a try. Sorry I can not remember the name of it but ask your doctor. Seems it is very popular in the medical world.

Good luck to any of you who try to stop this bad habit. Some day I will stop too.

I started smoking at 14.. Im now 35 and just quit last February.. No lie.. I loved to smoke.. but I do love my family more.. my dd and dh both begged me to quit.. Like most smokers I was raised with both parents smoking.. I had been exposed to cig smoke since conception.. thats a complete 36 years (35 yrs + 9 mths of Moms preg) of smoke!!!!! I tried cold turkey didnt work for me... I tried cutting back .. still didnt work.. then I realized that it was just as much as the action of stopping whatever I was doing, going to get it and lighting the cig..and taking my "break"... after I figured that out then I could start to find something to work for me.. I decided after alot of looking around to try Commit Lozenges.. and for me.. they worked great!!! I started with the 4 mg.. went down to the 2 mg.. I still got the movement of it all.. stopping and going to get one and then putting it in my mouth and getting the taste of nicotene.. I know that might not work for some, but the Commit and ALOT of prayer was exactly the perfect combination.. I still want to smoke sometimes and when I feel Im gonna break on a really stressed out day so I have extra Commits in the cabinet and I just grab one.. I have only done that maybe 3 or 4 times.. I will pray for you and I wish you so much luck I know exactly how hard it is..

But just a tip.. if you can quit for one week and when your out in public and you smell smoke on other ppl that will help you tremendously to maintain being smoke free... I was so embarrassed when I realized how bad I smelled all these years..

Chantix is the new medication. It does have a pretty good success rate. I haven't tried it yet (yep, I smoke too, started at 13, go figure) but others have and have been successful.

With insurance copay it is $50 a month, but you spend that much on cigarettes... the main side effects I heard were vivid dreams, nausea, vomiting, etc.

Good luck!!! You're in the right mind frame to do it!

My dad smoked when I was a kid and wouldn't stop even when we'd ask. Then I got a sinus infection while in high school that just wouldn't go away. I finally had to have surgery on my sinuses. Daddy still couldn't quit, but he moved outdoors and never smoked in the house again. He also tried switching to stinky cigars to curb his smoking (didn't work).

I know my sinuses were messed up, but I'll always wonder if they'd have gotten as bad if Daddy hadn't smoked around me for the first 13 years of my life. Now, if I catch a small cold, it turns into a sinus infection.

I pray you have the power to kick this forever, for yourself and your family. I know it's a tough addiction to break, but please do it for your family. Put away that $ you'd spend on a pack a day and take the kids to Disney!

I smoked 3 different times in my life and now no longer smoke and do not plan on starting again. Here are a few tips that I found helpful. Try the patch for a week or so. When you quit smoking there are actually 2 habits you have to break, the addiction to the niccotine and the action of your hand going to your mouth ever few seconds. I found that with the patch I was able to concentrate on what to do with my hands and break that habit first. I used a lot of gum too. The patch did itch for the first half and hour or so but then it went away for me. I also had more vivide dreams at night. I was happy to have those then the price paying for ciggs. I admit I loved smoking and was not stopping for anyone but myself. That is a big thing, you have to want it yourself, not for others or you will go back. Also remember that it will take about a week for all of the niccotine to get out of your system. You wont feel to bad for the first few days and then it will hit you if you go cold turkey. I also quit that way the first time. Try to start on Thursday or Friday so that you will hit the bottom over the weekend and not scare everyone you work with. I have been off them for a yr and a half and do not plan on ever starting again. it helps that I am a stay at home mom and watch a few other kids too, I am not around other smokers from work or out and about. I go watch my hubby bowl once in a while and really dont like being around the other smokers. Good luck!!!!! If you feel a weakening for some reason you can always send me a message, I will listen and it can help relieve the tention that is making you want to go back. Jenn
