So, my ducks/chickens were out in the yard. We are always outside when the dogs are outside with the ducks/chickens. They’ve never attacked them before. My son let the dogs out & no one was out there. My beagle attacked one of our ducks & my daughter rushed out there to grab her. Aside from a few missing feathers, she seems fine. Brought her inside, checked her for scratches, cuts, bleeding. Didn’t find any. Put some water in our tub & let her play around in it for awhile. We brought our other duck in with her to maybe help her. Other than being shaky, she seems fine. She was swimming, diving, preening herself. No limp wings or lameness. Anyone have any ideas as to if there’s something I should check or watch for? Sorry such a long post, just trying to explain & hopefully get some reassurance that she will be ok so my daughter will settle down & stop crying hysterically

So sorry to hear! I’m a beginner here but my husky attacked my 3 month old drake a few months ago. Not a scratch on him that I could find. But he wouldn’t walk and he died within the hour. So sad! Sounds like yours might be okay! I sure hope so!
Sorry about yours! Her name is Thelma. She seems fine & is swimming/following our other duck Louise around. A few lost feathers but I’m hoping all is good!

Poor duck! And poor daughter! I hope both feel better soon. I'm not an expert, but heres my thoughts. Being a prey animal, they can kind of go into shock after something like this. I would keep everything quiet for her, if she's inside with the other duck, I would ensure the lights/room is dim and quiet, for a couple hours, before letting her back out. But as long as she acting normally, walking normally, I think she'll be alright.
Is she still shaky? Eating/drinking anything?

I wonder if your beagle is a hugger? My son let my beagle pup out in his back yard where his three ducks were free ranging. My beagle ran up to the ducks, barked excitedly, terrifying the ducks, then jumped and put his front hegs round the duck's neck in a hug. The duck just lay down motionless but all the beagle did was lick the duck intil she was pulled off. Beagle wanted to play not harm the duck.

We both have to keep our ducks away from our ducks!!

This actually happened about an hr & half ago or so. It took me this long to settle my daughter down enough & thoroughly examine Thelma (our duck) she quit shaking & so we went outside with her & Louise (other duck) to see how she would be. She immediately waddled to their pool & dove in. When she got out she was eating grass/bugs like she usually does. Just a little quieter right now than normal.

He actually pulled a few feather out from her back. I don’t think he was doing anything to hurt her. If he wanted to he could’ve done some damage. I think it was more scary for my daughter. The ducks/chickens are her babies! They all run to her for a pat when she’s outside. No unsupervised dogs when our birds are out.

Just thought I would update everyone on Thelma. We kept a close eye on her all day yesterday & she seemed fine. My daughter went to let the ducks/chickens out & Thelma was a happy duck. Other than a few missing feathers, she is great & my daughter is happy that her baby is better. Thank you all for your concerns.

I have a similar situation right now. I brought in 5 abandoned Peking ducks when they were less than a week old. We have had them about 5 months now. The plan was never to keep them. I am waiting for a nearby sanctuary to be ready for them. Anyways I have two dogs they pay no mind to them. The ducks follow them around and they all get along just fine. I sometimes dog sit my neighbors dogs who are much more interested in them. Not aggressive but curious for sure so I never let them out back with the ducks alone. Until yesterday, I was working from home and the dogs needed out. I was not thinking and just let the dogs out while I was on the phone. It was less than a minute until I became clear headed and I ran outside to see the ducks running from one of the dogs. I didn’t see what happened but one of the ducks is limping. He has no visual cuts or scrapes. I held his leg in my hand and he didn’t seem to react in pain and I couldn’t feel anything abnormal. Again I am brand new to this. He is putting a little weight on it today, eating and drinking but still with a limp and lays down often to rest. Is there anything I can do for now?
