my dog growls at men and somtimes boys. what can I do?

In all my dogs, I've only ever let them boredom bark a matter of minutes before I go outside and tell them to cut it out. They slink off to their house and shut up when told to do so. Most of the time, I need merely walk out back and stand to get the desired result. I've never had to train this into them by any physical means...they sense my displeasure by my tone and try to avoid displeasing me.

It's called training.

JRT or not, I'd get my desired result or the dog would be forewith dispatched with...yes, a gun. I won't have a disobedient dog on my property.

Wow you guys are really really helping me.

someone I know, suggested petsmart?

I would avoid petsmart, petco, or any place similar. Th eir "trainers" go t hrough a couple weeks trianing, mostly focused on selling the classes. You can find a good trainer at some stores, but you need to interview them and observe the classes.

Check with your local humane society. Ask people who you see with well-behaved dogs for recommendations. If possible, try to find someone with experience working with reactive dogs. Do a search online for dog trainers in your area.

Before singing up for classes talk to the trainer. Go watch a couple of lessons. Find someone whose methods you are comfortable with. Find out what experience they have working with dogs - how long? What breeds? Do they have any titles on their dogs? What issues have they helped clients with?

Do NOT send Tucker away for training. The most important part of training a dog is training the owner. Working with Tucker will really increase your bond as well.

Good luck!

contact your local obedience club. Most large cities have one. forget about Petsmart trainers....most (certainly not all) of them are not very experienced to handle real problems. Contact veterinarians to see if they know of any good dog trainers. Ask for the trainer's credentials. For instance, you will want a trainer who has gotten AKC or UKC certifications/titles on dogs, and have proof of that. If a trainer has some certificate from a school but no evidence of actually bringing a dog along to the point that is earned an advanced title, I'd kind of have to wonder about that.

I can believe I didn't mention it. I tell people to never use Petsmart. You need a real trainer who has dealt with problem dogs. Try a kennel or look up in the directory for trainers. Go watch them work. Don't take you dog. Watch them work with others. You'll know when you see one you can work with. The best trainer isn't going to train the dog, they're going to be training you to train and work your dog.

OH forgot to mention shelters. Sometimes they get hold of decent trainers, especially to work problems dogs to see it they can even place them.

X2 Wolftracks... I was going to suggest, OP.. that you look up your local breed specific rescue organizations for the two breeds... so the JRT rescue group and the Collie rescue group... and ask them who they would recommend for the breeds. Hopefully you can work with someone who has extensive experience with both.

I did not have sucess when I tried one of those Petsmart classes years ago, not enough personal attention, not enough experience... you need a trainer who knows JRTs and knows BCs, has experience with them... as mentioned by others, the positive reinforcement training is what you should look out for with most dogs... and especially with the JRTs, they need postitive positive positive training.

When I was a teen we stayed with a lady who did JRT rescue. That was a crazy house! Our 4 jacks (3 females!) plus her 10 foster jacks... anyway, she was a trainer by day, and the only way she trained was with positive methods. Clicker training! The breed is independent enough and smart enough (part of the reason we admire them so) that you have to make them *want* to listen to you, cause you just won't get anywhere with domination.
As we were shown and have experienced, the best way to establish yourself as alpha with them is more of a headgame method. You eat first, you go through doors first, you get the best spots in the house (like the couch), everything that is good comes from you (including dinner, one kibble from your hand at a time)... well those are some of the methods we have found to work that you should probably look for in the trainer you find.

If not that, you could find a Flyball meet up in your area and attend that and ask around for suggested trainers. The Border Jack was specifically bred for Flyball! They had alot of Border collies and alot of JRTs excelling at the sport, so I suppose someone had the idea to combine the two

Who knows... You might even decide to try flyball or agility out with yours!
