My dog had a seizure today

Good point, Karen.

I have a golen retriever yellow lab mix. He had a siezure about 4 yrs ago. I took him to the vet, he said it could be from a number of things, environmental, epilepsy, or viral. It would have cost way too much to run tests, so he said to keep him comfortable, and give baby aspirin. The dog has since had about 2 or 3 seizures a year, they last from a few minutes to half an hour. Otherwise he is a healthy active dog. He was around 4 yrs old when the seizures started. We do use flea collars, and the seizures are usually in the summertime, maybe I should check ingredients in the collar.

These darn dogs always keeping us on our toes.

Flynn's seizure was almost a week ago, he hasn't done it again but he does seem a little reluctant to eat in the morning now...otherwise he's fine. I keep watching his every move and I think I'm starting to over analyze the situation....I need to just let him be a dog and stop trying to be so protective, it's not like I can prevent it from happening again if it's meant to be. I have however stopped using some floor products I was using. I honestly can't imagine what parents go through with their human children being ill. I was blessed with three very healthy kids that never so much as had a broken bone. (knocking on wood).

I had a small patio, with concrete sqaure stones and strips of grass in between. I'd spray raid on any ants I saw and then water hose the concrete to clean the raid chemicals off into the grass thinking it made it safer for my kids and dogs. For some reason my dog would eat the grass and after about 6 months to a year he a horrible seizure and we had to put him down. I'm pretty convinced it was the raid! He was super healthy up until he started eating the grass..I feel so sad that I poisoned my dog! Now I will bait the ants with borax and honey. I will never use RAID again! especially around places where you grow edibles..fruit trees herbs!!

My dog has idiopathic seizures. Thru the last 7 years, we have learned what can set them off. But most are not set off, they just happen. Hopefully you can find a vet who will offer you less expensive ways to get meds because they are on it life long. My dog is maxed out on Phenobarb, potassium Bromide, and valium. His seizures are less violent and farther apart. That;s the best we can do .

As you have recently moved it could be something new in the environment. I have an elderly Jack Russell who has petit mal seizures. He is a very allergic dog with an easily upset tummy and a scurfy skin. (I make him seem very attractive don't I?). He is on a hypoallergenic dry complete dog food, but several months ago, thinking I was doing him a favour, as his teeth aren't what they were, I changed him onto canned dog food. The seizures became more and more frequent. I changed him back, soaking the dry food to help him manage with his dodgy teeth, and he has been fine since. I spoke to our vet who said that diet could induce seizures in dogs prone to them, particularly the sensitive, allergic sort. Don't know if this helps?

I was browsing and saw this thread. Our lab, who is now about 10 or 11 yo (not quite sure, she was a rescue dog), had her first seizure that we know of (we adopted her 7.5 years ago) about 5 years ago. I quickly checked my homeopathic books when it started and gave her a remedy. This brought her out of the seizure and by the time we reached the vet with her, about 45 minutes later, he could find nothing wrong with her and suggested it was epilepsy. He said there was really nothing that could be done until the seizures got frequent. It was about 3 years before she had another one. I gave her another dose of the remedy. Several months later, she had a third seizure. This time I gave her a more potent dose of the remedy. She has not had a seizure since.

Homeopathic remedies are inexpensive and used responsibly will not harm your dog. If you are not familiar with homeopathy, I would suggest finding a homeopathic vet, they can often help when traditional medicine fails. Most traditional vets know nothing of homeopathy and mine was actually quite appalled when I told him what I had given her.

I did not put the name of the remedy above on purpose. As I said, used RESPONSIBLY they are not harmful, but too many people think not harmful means they can keep giving it whenever they THINK it is needed and this simply is not true. If anyone can not find or afford a homeopathic vet and is interested in trying this with their dog, PM and I will give you the name and potency of the remedy that I used along with the proper instructions for using it.

I have 2 Irish setters both male and healthy, Flynn is my oldest at 4 1/2 years. This morning he was laying on the couch, I was putting my shoes on to go let the chickens out and wham, Flynn falls off the couch in a full Grand Mal Seizure. I moved everything out of his way and tried to talk to him while it was going on. This is a first for us, he's never shown any form of epilepsy, he hasn't had access to any chemicals or anything poisonous that I know of. I called my friend who is a vet tech and she told me what to expect after the seizure was over. He made it through ok, it took about 3 hours for him to get back to normal. This was a serious one with foaming mouth and lot's of thrashing. The vet says they can't do anything but to monitor it for now. They think it's strange for a dog his age to start having epileptic seizures, usually it starts before the age of two statistically. So my question is, have any of you ever had something like this happen? I'm hoping it's a one time deal, but I know life is usually not that simple.

Sorry this is a little long. Thanks for any input.
Today my youngest dog, age 4, had a seizure after being outside. Our other 2 dogs recently had seizures within the past 2 months after being outside in our yard. WHAT could be causing this to all 3 dogs, being the fall season?? I just got rid of our back yard laying hens, in order to get chicks in the Spring.
