My dog is in labor...

I'm so sorry about the puppy loss. That has to be hard. :(

Just a gentle reminder though... we are going to need more puppy pictures soon. A LOT more puppy pictures...
:)

Tears!!!! - we lost the smallest pup this morning. I had to start tube feeding her, she didn't want to nurse. I was giving her subQ fluids and keeping her warm, but she started crying and not passing urine or stool. I hate when this happens! Mommy must have known something I didn't, as she kept trying to remove the puppy from the box on Wednesday.

It is hard to lose a pup. I have nursed a few because mom decided she didn't want that pup. Every time I have done it something has been wrong with that pup. The last one I did was one that mom refused to nurse so I bottle fed it for 2 days. We took the litter in to have dewclaws removed and the vet came out and said "What about the one with the club foot"...WHAT!? I never even looked at his feet, never had an issue before that. She showed it to me and, after a discussion about the possibilities for the pup's possible future, we decided euthanisia was best. He would have needed multiple surgeries and, assuming he would use that leg at all when he started walking, still never be able to walk correctly. It would have likely been a painful life for him. I was SO sad I couldn't even hold him again. After that I decided "mother knows best". the one before that, we had bottle fed for 2 weeks. We took it in because it just was not thriving. he had a bad heart murmmer and died a few days later. Now, the "mother knows best" remains untested so far . Knowing me I'll likely fight for any others that don't have a physical deformity.

How sweet. Sorry about the pup that died. We had sixty puppies here and never lost one until the last litter and we lost two. One had a cleft pallet and the other was born with the organs on the outside. It was so devastating to me that I decided to stop breeding. I became paranoid that something would happen to one of my females that I retired them to the couch. My vet said that you should always expect for at least one death in a litter and that we had been extremely fortunate. We had huge litters (14 being the biggest) I would get some sturdy rails around the perimeter of the whelping box though. I know of multiple people who lost puppies because of the mom laying on them. They need a way to escape when the mother lays on them. Good Luck with the rest of the puppies. They will bring you a lot of joy to you and the pictures will bring a lot of joy to us so keep posting.

It's so sad to lose them! I have lost one from being crushed. I rushed it to the vet, but it didn't make it. Poor babies :(.
How are the remaining pups doing?
