I killed a corn snake a month or so back - had to pull the *@#*& out of my purple martin house with one baby bird in his belly and one in his mouth.

ETA - When I threw the snake down from the birdhouse it was in hopes my dog would dispatch it - but he didn't. Wimp.

I love snake and just so you know - more people are BITTEN by snakes because they fool with them trying to move or kill them. If you leave them alone and teach kids to leave them alone - they'll leave you alone. Most snakes don't eat eggs - black snakes will - more snakes in the US eat baby chicks and not eggs.

Black on top - yellow/orange on bottom may have been a ringneck or a couple other species - definately wasn't a venomous one if it was yellow on the BELLY and black on the BACK.

Research your local snakes - know what they are and how to identify them. If it is a venomous one - and you feel like you HAVE to kill it - use a gun to kill it not a stick or shovel.

i kind of agree that you shouldnt have killed it, just moved it or left it alone. however that said, snakes are not my favorite either (although theyre kinda cool i guess) and since you didnt know what it was and have kids, i also sort of agree that you cant really take a chance so in this particular situation, i think you did the right thing because you have kids around and were unsure about what type of snake it was so you couldnt take a risk. however, in the future, i would recommend you learn about snakes in your area so you can tell what they are and hopefully leave the nonvenomous ones alone but in this situation i think you did the right thing. i think i heard somewhere that if theyre eyes are rounded theyre non venomous and if theyre eyes are slitted and something about the cross/x pattern (i think on the scales) not continuing down the tail and/or have fangs theyre poisonous, not too sure on this though, i think i heard it on an episode of Billy The Exterminator, not too sure what he said though but it was something like that.

also i was pretty close, the snake he caught was a python, theres a couple ways to tell first by looking at its eyeballs, if its pupils are rounded, not slitted, then its not poisonous and then also on the end, on the tail, if the scales remain in a cross pattern past the anus then its not poisonous but like i said, if you want you can watch the video and see/hear exactly what he says, its in the vid of part 3, which is the link i posted, and its about halfway through, the part where he starts talking about the snake not being poisonous and stuff starts at about at about 2:12 or 2:13 so if you want you can just fast forward to about there or if you want you can go back to part 1 and watch the whole thing. hope i helped. good luck!

Who wants to get close enough to check the pupils or bottom scales at the end of the tail? Not me! With that said, I pretty well ignore the snakes unless they act aggressively... Then, it's bullet to the brain or decapitation by shovel! Can't have an aggressive snake hanging out where my kids play.

I better not find any out in the run or coops. I'll have to find some neighbor kid to come remove 'em. Probably not gonna be easy when some kid experiences a wild-eyed, probably incoherent, hefty old lady grasp at an arm, wheezing, "Come here! Come here!"

Hey it happens to us all .. We each have our things that just create that knee jerk reaction ... Whats done is done and cant be changed , but you can be proactive in the future and learn your snakes...
Also dont get discouraged when folks are being unkind or judgemental on here... My first few posts got a lot of slack to the point I almost left BYC entirely (actually more then once ) The bottom line is these folks dont know oyu from Adam and have NO right to judge or belittle you.. And besdies that how many of them are you ever gonna have to meet in real life ? Not that many.. Just let the bad roll off your back and the good will most assuredly out weigh it ...

I HATE snakes. I have always feared them regardless of whether they are poisonous or not and that isn't going to change.

My husband always says the only good snake is a dead snake
