I feel your pain. We lost our first beagle in 2006, then we found out that she died of lung worm. She was ten years old and we found her lying next to the garden.

If she was HBC, she would have had internal bleeding. That is really easy to spot on a necropsy. Your vet should be able to tell in a matter of a couple minutes.

I'm so sorry for your loss. From what you describe, I'd just about bet the farm that it was auto vs. animal, and animal almost never wins.
