I have been known to brag about the fact that my Black Lab Ziggy is such a good protector of the flock. I didn't really have to train him. I just said no when he made any aggressive moves toward my birds and he caught on to the idea that the chickens are under his protection. One of the last times I butchered I threw Ziggy a little piece of raw chicken and he turned it down. I was pretty impressed, but not nearly as impressed as I was today.
Today I butchered a few roosters that I killed the other day and I brought them straight in the kitchen and threw them in the crock pot! When we were eating, my son threw Ziggy a bit of cooked chicken and he absolutely refused to eat it. The only explanation I can think of is that he really understands that it was one of our backyard chickens on the plate!
