Hi, how did this turn out? I am going through the same thing with one of my duck eggs it has been 2 full days it has been pushing/ bobbing up on air cell but don’t think it really pushed through. Like it is having a hard time. It’s been in same position for this long too so I’m a bit worried. Hope yours made it through! Any advise? It looks like a detached membrane when I have googled it but I didn’t think this could happen when my duckling is definitely around day 28,
HI there, sorry to hear that your having the same trouble as me! It’s very stressful not knowing what to do so first step don’t panic. What day is your duck egg on? My duck was way past it’s hatch day so I should have helped it out sooner but if your egg has not yet reached day 28 give it some time. also have your other eggs pipped internally?
This is what I struggled with, it’s the not knowing that’s so worrying! If I had gone with my instincts and assisted with the hatch that night my duckling would have been here. I left mine to late unfortunately so My only advise is to go with your instincts, if you do assist with the hatch read up about it first as I found it really helpful! I have copied the link that I used. https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/step-by-step-guide-to-assisted-hatching.64660/Hi, oh yes Lol this def has me so stressed out.. I have 2 Muscovy eggs which take about 35 days to hatch. Everywhere I have read on these say they will start to internal pip around day 32. This is day 34 but the reason I am worried is bc the one egg is abnormally small as well as the air sac. The other egg in the incubator is normal size but also has always been a few days behind in development so it has not internally pipped yet as suspected. so I have been worried about this small one all along.AND it started what I thought was internally pipping 2 days ago now. I’m worried it can’t get into position with the egg being small. I even see a bruising mark on outside of egg BELOW the air sac and can hear faint clicking or tapping sound when I hold it to ear every once in a while. This evening will be 72 hours since I noticed it above air sac trying to poke through. If I knew it had internally pipped for sure above air sac I would def make safe hole but I am still u sure if the beak is up too or if it is stuck and trying to pip below air sac. So if I make safe hole I’m afraid it might do more damage and dry it out shrink wrapping since the beak may be lower down on egg. I don’t know if any of this makes any sense to you but if u have any suggestions I would sure appreciate it![]()
I am so very sorry to hear that! Don’t beat yourself up- you are right I don’t think there is a clear sign to let us know for sure when to help- if we do and it ends up not making it we feel awful and if we don’t we feel bad for not doing it. I’m even second guessing my “gut instinct” though so I am so confused right now! I am going to keep a close eye on it today by candling every so often which I hope doesn’t effect it too much and as long as I see as much movement and even the slightest changes I’m going to try and let it be for now. my biggest question is though.. if I do intervene and end up making safe hole in air sac and it hasn’t pipped through and not in position as I suspect wouldn’t that make things worse by drying the membrane? Ahhhh so many questions! I just don’t know. This is what I struggled with, it’s the not knowing that’s so worrying! I read that if it hasn’t pipped and you break the air cell to see the membrane you can feel it and possibly guess what position it’s in, you can keep it moist with water but I would have rather got my duckling out and if it did die at least I tried to save it, I think I feel worse because I didn’t help it or try until it was too lateI am so very sorry to hear that! Yes it is- it’s so hard to know what to do and what not to do in these situations. I think it is trickier for our situations bc if we knew for sure they have internally pipped we would def know we had to intervene. Ugh I’m sorry you had to go through that and I just hope I end up doing the “right” thing for this little one :/ thanks for the advice I appreciate it!I read that if it hasn’t pipped and you break the air cell to see the membrane you can feel it and possibly guess what position it’s in, you can keep it moist with water but I would have rather got my duckling out and if it did die at least I tried to save it, I think I feel worse because I didn’t help it or try until it was too late
It’s hard to give advise when it comes to assisting a hatch because it can go both ways so just keep an eye on it and go with your instincts
