My duck is exhibiting strange behavior

If you want to treat for gapeworms you need to get some fenbendazole or albendazole. Tractor Supply sells Safeguard for goats (fenbendazole), Valbazen (albendazole) usually has to be ordered.

Sadly, DE doesn't treat worms.

If there is something stuck it's crop that is easy enough to check. To check the crop, just hold the duck and gently palpate the right side of it's neck. Start at the top of the neck nd work your way down to the body.

If you haven't already done so, check the inside of the mouth too.

We have checked the inside of her mouth and felt up and down her neck and her crop. We didn’t see or feel anything. Her mouth looked healthy and her crop was fairly hard to feel, so there’s nothing in it as far as we can tell. She apparently has also been tilting her neck to her left when swallowing (miscommunication between hubby and I). I tried to get a video today, but it’s hard to see. Most people would think she’s looking somewhere, but since she’s been doing this for a couple weeks, we can see the it well.

We did purchase Safeguard, but haven’t used it yet. She’s not showing the symptoms of gape worms aside from the neck movement. It seems like we should administer the safeguard individually to make sure they all get the proper dose, but that is not as easy thing to do, as you all know well.

To treat gapes they need to get the worming medicine for 5 consecutive days. Since capillary worms can live in the esophagus, I would treat for those too. The dose is 0.23 ml per pound of body weight for five days.

Thank you for the link. We had to give a duck antibiotics last year and it was ok until she figured out what we were doing. Then every dose got harder as she fought us more. Even if I had her restrained well, she would fight us opening her mouth and trying to keep her head tilted back.

@Miss Lydia she is swallowing fine. She’s eating treats, food and drinking water without losing any, choking, spitting anything back out....it’s just the head tilt/neck movement that is strange. And why the neck movement is to her left doesn’t make any sense to me. Her esophagus is on the right, correct? So why would she want to move her neck to the left to swallow? It’s very strange to me.

I was finally able to get and upload a video! The duck in question is the one basically in the center of the screen facing the camera. She tilts her head a little to the right, then pulls her neck to left. She's eating frozen peas I put in their water bowl. I look forward to hearing what everyone thinks. Video is here
