Not to be a downer, but I don't think you can count on ever being able to pet the duck. I've never owned a duck or a chicken that likes to be petted. A select few of them have tolerated being held, but they were hatched artificially and cuddled daily from birth.

Fowl aren't really that kind of pets. They are wonderful in many ways, but if you want cuddling, get a mammal.

Our first duck would literally run up to you and lay in the path you we were walking to get petted. I think she was just really special though. We unfortunately lost her to a predator recently. Her companion never let us touch her though and they were raised together so it may partially be a personality issue.
