MY duck lost his bill

Only time I saw something like that was a little love bird who tried to cop a big bird attitude around his African Grey big brother. He had absolutely no beak because Big Brother tore it off.

The woman had him on her shoulder at a bird show and he was doing well, but only because she made soft foods for him and I don't know if she had to hand feed him or if he could eat the soft foods himself.

Sounds like a little too much trouble to go to for a duck though.

So I suspect something did tear it off.

I don't believe it is due to cold weather. My ducks rarely go into shelter and stay out even when we have temps are far below zero and none of them have suffered frostbite. Ducks are pretty tough.

If the bill is completely off he must be in agony.

I had a goose in the summer of 07 that was swimming in the pond, and a snapping turtle ripped off her top beak up into her sinus cavity. She was walking around with the group like nothing happend. Sadly I had to put her to sleep. It still bothers me today. I tried to catch the snapper, but didnt.

Culling means to either remove from your flock, or put it sleep if it is hurt, etc.

Is the whole bill gone?

Was there a lot of blood loss?

Is the duck trying to eat and drink?

Is the tongue still present?

If the duck is a loved pet, your decision will be what is best for the duck. Quality of life and can it feed itself, etc. Your decision may be easier for you to make if the duck is destined for the table or is not a pet.

If a duck has enough bill to scoop food and water, it may be ok. The bill depending on what is left, will be sore, so if you decide not to put it down, you will need to make some soft mash for it to eat until the edges of the bill heal over.

You will need to separate it and maybe bring it indoors and keep the bill edges clean and out of the dirt.

I agree with the others, it would be easier to assess with a good clearly focused picture to help.

I will move this to the emergency forum for more response.

Please keep us posted.

Regardless of what you do with the duck minus the bill, you need to fix your boy to girl ratio. You have too many drakes and not enough hens.

Hi again all, thanks so much for all of your responses, to answer some of other peoples comments, yes this is a pet duck not a table duck as are all of our chickens, so it was very hard for us to see him this way and we were pretty sure he was suffering, so we brought him down to the local vet and they put him down for us, still no reasoning for this maybe just something freak, as far as our girl boy ratio, we didn't know until they got older, they were the last four left at our local tractor supply so we bought the remainder and that was what we got. Again, thank you all for your help.

thank you SO much for not letting him suffer!..thank you! thank you!....

Have you seen the story about the eagle given a prosthetic bill? If you are quixotic, google that. Her name is Beauty. If there is enough of a stump there might be possibilities.
