This morning I went out to collect any eggs and one of my Easter Eggers “Nosey Rosie” was in the nest box. So I let her be and came back out when I heard her announcing she laid. To my surprise, I opened the nest box to find a lavender egg (one of far right in pic)! She’s always laid green eggs which you can see in the pic! We’ve had her since she was a couple days old and this is the first time this has happened! I didn’t know that their egg colors could change! Is this normal??
Update: Now Rosie is back in the nest box haha!! So now I’m wondering if it was actually an egg laid by one of the Rhode Island Reds and had a calcium layer that’s making it look different?
So strange, but I agree very pretty!
I will keep y’all updated! I guess I’ll know for sure if we get the usual 2 green eggs and only 1 brown egg later today.
(We have 2 RIR and 2 EEs)
She was in the nest box as soon as I got out there so I didn’t see the egg, BUT I just went out again and there was her nice pretty green egg fresh and warm! HAHA!
I guess it was the RIR!! And now that I think of it, one of them (Penny) has laid her brown eggs with lavender speckles! Maybe it is hers with a thick bloom like you mentioned above! How cool!
Thank y’all!
Yeah, sometimes they do the egg call - even when there's no egg. Genetically, it would be very odd for a bird to lay a completely different colored egg... they tend to lay variations on their color, but not a new color. btw: I love her name!!
Haha!! I have an EE that likes to cackle when she sits on the other girls eggs. I thought she was laying a pink egg for the longest time until I actually saw a blue one come out of her! She was just sitting on my Barred Rocks eggs lol!
