I have a chicken with a broken upper mandible it seems to have come apart. Is this an injury or is she lacking something in her diet and what do I do. She could not eat the normal pellet food so we are giving her Mashed food and she's eating that fine.

If it turns out to be a fracture you can gently bend it back in place and put some superglue on the end of a q-tip. Make sure to only put it on the crack because you don't want to glue her mouth shut or her tongue to the roof of her mouth.
Thank you!! I was thinking she injured herself too. I've never seen this before. Thank you for your help!

This exact thing happened to my hen last year. There's some helpful info in that thread on my page. Since the flesh is salvageable, the beak itself will continue to grow out like a nail that got lifted from it's bed. In about a week or so the broken beak will fall off naturally and you'll see new growth up by the nostril soon after that. In the meantime, it's best to just leave it alone so as not to cause infection or pain. the biggest concern here is making it easy for her to eat, so I found that watering down feed, or even making fruit smoothies is a good idea . I would even warm it up so it doesn't shock the raw skin underneath. I used to take a qtip and dab a bit of antibiotic (WITHOUT pain relief,it's toxic to birds) like Neosporin without pain relief, and I'd crush up baby aspirin and mix that with some warm water, and just dab it on the flesh under the beak "hood". I only did this until I could see a scabby keratin layer form on the skin, then I let it do its thing.
