Actually the -35F felt good compared to the day before with -25F and a 20 to 30 mph wind. Yesterday there was no wind at all. Livestock waterers that were froze up on tuesday were all open yesterday. I think there were a few more vehicles in the area which didn't start though and I'm glad I didn't need to use my loader tractor which sits outside. It would have taken 10 minutes to raise the loader the first time and letting the clutch out with the transmisson in neutral probably would have killed the engine!
Since your on the weather, I can't remember the name of the device DD had to buy when she was in Minot for her car engine in winter?...I remember the winds when flying into Minot!!...
They didn't make it. 12 out of 14 were frozen badly enough to crack the shells. The other 4 are very cold and are probably frozen internally enough to break the air sac. I will candle them this evening and if the air sacs are intact I will set them tomorrow but I doubt they will develop.
Oh well, I knew I was taking a big chance on the weather when I ordered them. Maybe I'll have to dig out my old galvanized incubator and order more in a couple of weeks although there are 4 blue silkie egss in the batch we got yesterday. But my DW definately wants some buff orps and I'd like a few blue or splashes too! And my DD wants some frizzles and maybe a showgirl or two for my GDD
I set 39 eggs from the first batch last night. The include purebred spitzhauben, black summatra, and silkies; and xbred americaunas, welsummers, & red phoenix
I also set the 4 silkie eggs from the second batch which were not obviously frozen and cracked. I doubt if they will develop but I had to give them the chance.
Temps look good this morning and after adding a wet rag in one corner the humidity is up to 45%.
