Medicine Hat , alberta , Canada
We bought an acreage back in April and I knew I had to get emu’s
first I got River
He is a loving boy
If he sees me he has to be beside me
He will follow me around all the time
He loves back scratches and immediately lays down for more
He is with ducks , turkeys , chickens and geese
The one younger goose is his best friend as he was a lone baby
He was born April 11
Then I got Breeze a young 2 week old female from a different breeder a month ago
They are out together but haven’t bonded yet
I know they may never bond but I’m hoping because they are both young they may
I have read they have to be fenced in. At this time they aren’t and neither one leave the area
I do have a big pen area we are working on fixing as it has some weak spots or broken boards
They will have a barn 16x16 area for themselves
Right now they both sleep in the coop with the ducks / geese
Breeze doesn’t go in herself and I have to catch her at night
River goes in but waits till all other birds are in
If he gets Spicy with his dance around the small birds I say river No and he immediately stops
He listens so well
I have read they aren’t usually like this with listening and can’t be free ranging or they run away
Anyone ever have one that didn’t have to be in a pen ?
Or Is he this good cause he is still young ?
He loves my grandson
They hang out and run around playing

'Anyone ever have one that didn’t have to be in a pen ?'

Given their druthers, New Duck Mommy, unfenced adult emus will wander off to explore the world.

As chicks -- tame chicks -- we'd guess that they'll happily stau where they get food and care. And I wonder how the absence of other emus in their vicinity affects their behavior.

But as they reach adulthood, they enter The Great Big Game of Emu Procreation. This entails fighting with rivals; securing breeding partners; securing territory on which to breed; shmoozing over distances with flocks of emus.

The amount of data we have on how far they travel in life is almost nothing. But you can make some pretty good guesses. The woodwardi emus -- the top half of Western Australia -- live in the desert mainly, and they must cover some very serious distances.

I've had tame-wild emus from my district -- rothschildi -- wander off for years at a time. So I guess that they've wandered pretty far into the National Park with the wild birds. Number One was absent for two-and-a-half years once. Felicity Emu for four and a half.

In the micro: many times I have sat for hours and watched the wild emus through binoculars. On any day, they'll graze across an area of maybe 500 acres, stopping at four or five pastures on the way.

Just for fun: play for your emus any recording you can find of emu vocalisations: male, female, chicks

How are your emus doing? I hatched some last spring, but didn't end up keeping any. I wanted boys and they were all female. A part of me still wants a couple, but don't want to go through the hassle of higher fencing, etc. Yours are so cute. I saw them in the abused duck lover thread. I also belong to that "group". 🤣
