When you put water in remember to put rocks or marbles in the trough so the chicks won't drown. Don't use layer food as it is too high in calcium and too low in protien. You can use chick starter or if you are going to have them out with the rest of the flock I use gamebird 22% (or flockraiser) and put oyster shell out free choice for the laying hens.
